Almost but not quite
By Panfold
I am always looking for a good historical mystery. This is close, but just does not get there. The plot within plots are not too tangled, and it actually does not rely on battles and blood. However, the ending seems rushed. Cross Europe in a week? Save the day in a implausible finale? I hope future books focus on the ending as much as the middle.

Lot of Spy Plots But Not Much Action
By James Dainis
Gaius Drusus Falminius is a new tribune assigned to the Ninth legion in Britain. While on patrol, his command is wiped out by barbarians and only he and one auxiliary survive. This makes him a hero. A commissary centurion recruits him to join the commissaries or intelligence gatherers. He spends much time with the various Briton tribes including having an affair with a woman warrior head of one clan. In time he learns of a treasonous plot and he must risk all, that of his life and others, to thwart the threat.

This is not your typical Roman legion novel. There is very little battle action and much that there is takes place off stage, so to speak. The plot centers around spies and counter spies, plots and counter plots. Some things at the end do get a bit unbelievable, even for a work of fiction but it is still entertaining. The descriptions and dialogue are well done and believable. To spice things up we have the governor's beautiful concubine who falls for Falminius as well as the beautiful warrior women who also falls for Falminius when she is not busy saving his life by single handed fighting off several trained legionnaires at the same time. Some of the background subplots leading to the main plot may be a bit hard to take but, as I said it is still entertaining. Personally, I will stick to novels such as Marius' Mules series, which have a lot of battle action.

An above average story about the era. The author provided some interesting information about the Roman "Commissary Men".or "Frumentari" (Grain Men)Intelligence agents. I enjoyed it. Light reading.
