A good book for microbiology students
By Syed Yousaf Kazmi
A good book for microbiology students. The only two problems I faced were that the description about the each case is very lengthy and the reader has to give break while studying one case with its complete discussion. Secondly, the edition is quite old one and these days the subject of microbiology is changing with great pace. However, i will still recommend this book for all microbiology students and teachers alike.

SERIOUSLY SEXY, COMPLETELY CAPTIVATING AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING !!!
By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
Title: Enslaved by the Alpha
Series: Shifters of Nunavut
Designation: Book Two of Series, Standalone Novel, NO Cliffhanger
Author: Viola Rivard
Reading Platform: Kindle Unlimited
My Rating: FIVE SUPER SEXY STARS*****
Yowza! New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Viola Rivard has knocked it out of the park - again! Enslaved by the Alpha was originally published as a multi-installment serial which is how I initially read it but Rivard has now combined all seven installments into one delicious, convenient novel and folks, it's a real firecracker! And the entire series just keeps getting better and better! You can read more about the adventure began with the Shifters of Nunavut in Rivard's first book of the series, Capturing the Alpa. But let's talk about this story. It's exciting, edgy, thrilling, imaginative, humorous, arousing, romantic and seductive. Oh, and did I mention hot? Oh yes, it's definitely hot! The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with alternating his and her points of view. The dialogue is well executed and flows effortlessly. And the characters... well, they're always the best part of Viola's stories. Don't get me wrong, Viola's books are always fast paced, well crafted, well developed and well edited and truly, a pleasure to read but it's her characters that I fall in love with every single time. Her characters are always unique, captivating, engaging, endearing and at times, laugh out loud funny but above all else, Viola creates, hands down, the most grumpy, growly, quite possibly irredeemable and certainly the most arrogant male antiheroes of anyone I know. You know, the kind we love to hate but secretly love, and of course, are always devilishly handsome.(Swoon....) And the male protagonist in this story is no exception. The interaction and banter between the male and female protagonist is delightful and often hilarious and their sexual chemistry is almost palpable. Viola skillfully combines all of these elements to craft a delightfully entertaining paranormal tale filled to the brim with heart-pounding danger, heartbreaking drama, heart-stopping action, spine-tingling adventure, side-splitting humor and let's not forget, steamy, dreamy romance. When I read a Viola Rivard story, I'm always reminded of the Carly Simon song, Nobody Does It Better. The words replay in my mind: Nobody does it better, Makes me feel sad for the rest, Nobody does it half as good as you, Baby you're the best. And Viola definitely is the best! Buckle up my lovelies! It's another wild ride! And this time, we travel to the tundra of the Arctic for our story.
Book One:
Twenty-eight year old Astrid Castello is very much out of her element. As a native Floridian, the climate of the Arctic tundra definitely does not agree with her and it's all her younger sister Ginnifer's fault. Months ago, her sister had traveled to the Arctic to film a documentary on the way of life of werewolf packs living in the area and after finishing her film, she returned to the Siluit Pack and Zane, their alpha, is holding her prisoner. If her sister isn't already dead and Astrid can somehow manage to rescue her, then she's going to kill her for this. She doesn't even really like her sister but here she is, neck deep in trouble in the Arctic, trying to rescue her sister for her parents' sake. Yes, it's for them because she doesn't want to tell them that their favored daughter has traveled back to Nunuvat to live with the Siluit werewolf pack. And it has cost her everything including all her money! Well, technically the twelve thousand dollars she paid for her guides was actually Ginnifer's money since she withdrew(stole - minor detail) it from Ginnifer's bank account but she wouldn't have had to do it if Ginnifer had stayed at home instead of traipsing all over the globe as a freelance documentary filmmaker. And now, she finds herself in the middle of nowhere with a group of men who started out as her very kind guides but had now turned into a group of opportunists who were only interested in poaching the furs of werewolves and probably murdering her. Her plan was to travel to the location of the Amarok Pack and try to make a deal with their Alpha, Erik, to enlist his help in recovering her sister from the rival Siluit Pack where her sister is being held. Unfortunately, her meeting with the Amarok Pack did not go as planned. She has seriously underestimated the sheer ruthlessness and savagery of the werewolves because the wolves of the Amarok pack have just slaughtered all of her very questionable guides, leaving only her alive. Oh my! Erik is a handsome, arrogant, ruthless and very selfish wolf who is determined to have things his way and unfortunately, there's only one deal the Alpha is willing to accept - her. Huh? Oh yes, Erik demands that she give herself willingly to him in exchange for him helping to rescue her sister. Oh my goodness! What's a girl to do? Why, make a deal, of course! Sadly, Astrid soon realizes that she has truly sacrificed everything to rescue her sister from the clutches of a demon and in the process, has ended up selling her own soul to the devil. Oh my! Will Astrid somehow manage to save her sister and herself or will she be Erik's new plaything until he grows tired of her and gives her to another wolf???
Book Two:
The story continues with Astrid struggling to find her place in the pack while learning exactly what being owned by Erik entails. At the same time, Erik is desperately struggling to control his wolf, something he has never had a problem with before. Apparently his beast believes that Astrid is his mate and is determined to have her and only her.Oh my! Will Erik be able to maintain his control or will he lose the battle to his wolf??? Will Astrid be able to convince Erik to rescue her sister from the Siluit Pack???
Book Three:
The story continues with Erik finally agreeing to send a group of wolves to the Siluit Pack to rescue Ginnifer but after Astrid reveals a possible relationship between Ginnifer and Zane, the Siluit Pack Alpha, Erik changes his plans and decides to make the journey himself and use Astrid as a bargaining chip to gain access to the Siluit Pack's hunting grounds. Their dangerous journey results in drastic changes in the relationship between the two unlikely lovers and Erik begins to see Astrid in a new light. Maybe his wolf wasn't so wrong after all. But will they be able to rescue Ginnifer from Zane or does she even need saving???
Book Four:
Astrid learns that her sister Ginnifer is now mated to Zane. What? Oh yes! And they truly love each other and are expecting their first child. She has sacrificed her life for nothing. Well, maybe nothing is stretching the truth since Erik now seems determined to make her his mate. Huh? Oh my! Originally, Erik had planned to just take her until he tired of her and then give her to another member of his pack(his brother) but he has quickly come to the sudden realization that he wants no one else to even touch her - ever! Oh my goodness! He wants her to become his mate in every sense of the word including giving her a pup - his pup! Erik discovers that he truly likes the idea and having her as his mate and having a pup of his own to teach and to one day become alpha of his pack. He likes it a lot but Astrid doesn't appear to be enthusiastic about the idea. She knows she can't become pregnant and have a child - she's already tried and failed. That's what broke up her marriage. So, she convinces Erik to accept a bargain - if she's not pregnant by spring, he will allow her to leave and go back home to Florida. Hmmm....But is leaving Erik what she really wants??? Has Erik's harsh and abrasive personality turned Astrid against him for good or could she be developing real feelings for the handsome, aggressive alpha???
Book Five:
Erik claims that Astrid has entered her fertile cycle and is determined to claim her, mate her and impregnate her. Although Astrid still doubts that she could ever become pregnant, she and Erik both seem to be powerless to resist the pull of the mating thrall until Erik is interrupted with the devastating news that two of his pack have been killed by the bears who seem intent on invading the land of the Amarok Pack. Erik realizes no matter how much he wants to stay with Astrid, he must place the welfare of the pack before his own needs. As Alpha and leader of his people, he must go himself to investigate the level of threat the bears pose to his territory and his pack. Unfortunately, there are members of the Amarok pack who oppose a mating between Erik and Astrid for reasons of their own and Astrid's life may be at risk from an unexpected enemy. Can Astrid ever be truly safe with the Erik's pack???
Book Six:
After an surprising betrayal during Erik's absence, an unsuspecting Astrid realizes only too late that she has put her trust in the wrong she-wolf and the cost of her mistake is very nearly her life. As Astrid continues to struggle to find and earn her place in the pack, Erik struggles with his actions on how to protect his new mate and his pack from the bears encroaching on his southern border. The mating thrall and sudden absence from Astrid has forced Erik to admit his and his wolf's need for the vulnerable human and he's now faced with an impossible decision, one that will affect his mate and his pack. Astrid is his; she is his mate and he has no intention of giving her up - ever. He wants to give her a pup and will do anything to make that happen. But what or should I say who is Erik willing to sacrifice in order to insure their safety???
Book Seven:
During a meeting with the bears, Erik recovers a near dead packmate but in order to protect his mate and pack, is forced to betray the Siluit Pack and enter into a tentative agreement. But upon returning home, he learns that Astrid is indeed pregnant and finds that he is very pleased at the aspect of having a mate and now a pup. While Astrid is struggling with her true feelings for Erik and trying to come to terms with the fact that she does love him, Erik wrestles with his own internal conflict, torn between his duty to his pack and his desire to protect his mate and unborn pup. And his dilemma only intensifies when Astrid's life is once again placed in imminent danger. When Zane, a very pregnant Ginnifer and the entire Siluit Pack show up seeking shelter and refuge with the Amorak Pack, Erik is faced with another decision that could alter not only his future but also the future of both packs. Surprisingly, the cold-hearted, cruel Alpha of the Amorak Pack finally realizes that at some point during his new relationship with Astrid, he has changed and change may not necessarily be a bad thing. But will it be enough to save Astrid, his pack and the Siluit Pack. I guess we'll have to wait and see. No spoilers from me but I will say this......Arrogant, ruthless, dominant Alpha wolf who takes what he wants regardless of the consequences and may just be irredeemable-check! Curvaceous, naive heroine who is on a mission to save her sister and may just talk the alpha wolf to death-check! A sister who is 'supposedly' being held captive by a rival werewolf pack-check! A cast of wonderful characters-check! Danger, drama, action, adventure and enemies galore-check! Humor, heated attraction, unconventional romance and steamy dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait for Capturing the Alpha, the next release in Viola's Shifters of Nunavut Series. Seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining!

A tough alpha for a harsh environment, can his slave survive?
By Gigi's Reads
I was gifted this book for an honest review.

Enslaved by the Alpha gives us another look at a wolf pack in Nunavut. But this Alpha rules his pack with an iron grip. Erik is often described as cruel, and having never been around "civilization" he is used to doing as he pleases without thought to anyone else. And everything he does is for his or his pack's good. Even after reading the book I'm not sure I like Erik.

Astrid may be a strong career woman, fairly comfortable in her own skin, but she also has insecurities. She had no idea there would be pack politics and hierarchies on the tundra.

This book encompasses so much about friendships, relationships as well as action and adventure. The story twists and turns and won't let you go till the end.

Take me to Amarok
By Bookie
I wasn't sure what I would think of this book at first. We briefly meet Astrid in the first book and I wasn't a fan. Even in the start of this one I thought she was whiny and needed to grow up. But then, I actually related to her! Astrid goes in search of Ginnifer trying to "rescue" her from the Siluit pack. On her way, her tour guides are murdered by the Amarok pack and she strikes a deal with Erik, the alpha, to become his if they help her get her sister back.
I liked the development of Erik and Astrid's relationship. It wasn't love at first sight even though they shared an attraction for one another.

The Ottoman Age of Exploration, by Giancarlo Casale

In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" conquered Egypt and brought his empire for the first time in history into direct contact with the trading world of the Indian Ocean. During the decades that followed, the Ottomans became progressively more engaged in the affairs of this vast and previously unfamiliar region, eventually to the point of launching a systematic ideological, military and commercial challenge to the Portuguese Empire, their main rival for control of the lucrative trade routes of maritime Asia.

The Ottoman Age of Exploration is the first comprehensive historical account of this century-long struggle for global dominance, a struggle that raged from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Straits of Malacca, and from the interior of Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. Based on extensive research in the archives of Turkey and Portugal, as well as materials written on three continents and in a half dozen languages, it presents an unprecedented picture of the global reach of the Ottoman state during the sixteenth century. It does so through a dramatic recounting of the lives of sultans and viziers, spies, corsairs, soldiers-of-fortune, and women from the imperial harem. Challenging traditional narratives of Western dominance, it argues that the Ottomans were not only active participants in the Age of Exploration, but ultimately bested the Portuguese in the game of global politics by using sea power, dynastic prestige, and commercial savoir faire to create their own imperial dominion throughout the Indian Ocean.

"[A]n important work." --The Historian

"Far from being bystanders, the Ottomans emerge from Giancarlo Casale's study as key actors in the sixteenth-century age of exploration. Their 1517 conquest of Egypt made the Empire into a major Red Sea power. It also made the Ottoman sultans the Protectors of the Two Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina and gave them claims to being the most prestigious Muslim sovereigns. Exploding conventional opinions about the Ottomans as a land-based power, about their lack of prowess in seafaring, about their inward-looking commercial policy, and about their cultural introversion, Casale has produced a study of enduring significance for the history of the Ottoman Empire and of the whole sixteenth-century world."--Carter V. Findley, author of The Turks in World History

"Casale has made a major contribution to the intellectual and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire. He shows that the Ottoman conquest of the Arab world was no mere acquisition of territory. Through the Arab lands, the Ottomans discovered the Indian Ocean and embarked on an intellectual journey through the previously unknown world of medieval Arab scholarship."--Molly Greene, Princeton University

"This path-breaking account of Ottoman exploration of the Indian Ocean upends a number of assumptions about imperial aspirations, mercantile aptitudes, and modes of expansion and alliance-building. Giancarlo Casale gives us a wonderfully lively narrative of a century of Ottoman rivalry with the Portuguese, against whom the empire deployed technological know-how, persuasive rhetoric, effective political and geographic intelligence, and above all a series of gifted and daring statesmen and seamen."--Leslie Peirce, New York University

"Giancarlo Casale challenges the master narrative that portrays Christian Europeans as the sole maritime explorers of the sixteenth century. Making room for the Ottoman Turks will discomfit world historians, but the power and elegance of Casale's argument and the weight of the evidence he presents cannot be denied."--Richard W. Bulliet, Columbia University

"Once in a while, one has the opportunity to read a monograph that changes the way you envision a people, empire or event and, thus, changes the way you teach the particular subject in the classroom. Giancarlo Casale's book on the Ottomans in the sixteenth century accomplishes just thatEL.His arguments are sure to spawn interesting debate and will also find their way into classrooms,ELproviding scholars and students confirmation that the Ottomans were agents of change in the Indian Ocean and its spice trade." --Kathy Callahan, World History Bulletin

Interesting and Useful
By R. Albin
This interesting and clearly written book is an effort to provide a more balanced view of the Ottoman Empire. Casale is concerned with rebutting or modifying the view that the Ottoman Empire was an inward looking, land based polity that failed to exhibit the dynamism of European states in exploring new territories and pursuing commercial opportunities. To dispell this view of the Ottoman Empire, Casale provides a fairly detailed narrative of Ottoman involvement in the Indian Ocean, particularly their rivalry with the Portugese. Casale argues well that this was a major effort by the Ottomans, that this was a novel effort, that the Ottoman court exhibited considerable interest in new geographic knowledge, and that commercial interests, particularly managing the spice trade from Southeast Asia, were of considerable importance. Casale's narrative, which is interesting in its own right, largely substantiates these points and is consistent with Casale's general argument. Viewed through the lens of Ottoman activities in the Indian Ocean, the Ottoman Empire does look quite a bit like several of the agressively expansionist and mercantilist European states.

Casale's arguments, however, have some defects. His European comparator is Portugal, the major Indian Ocean rival for the Ottomans. But, Casale is comparing a relatively weak European state with arguably the most powerful state in the European state system. To really make a strong case, Casale would have to compare the Ottoman Empire in detail with a comparable European state, which would mean a detailed comparison with Hapsburg Spain, not Portugal. Casale makes much of the Ottoman court's interest in new geographic knowledge but adduces little evidence that there was anything comparable to the print culture of Europe or that Ottoman intellectuals were generating new approaches like the more important European cartographers. Casale's criticism of prior views of the Ottomans as "land-based" is a bit of a straw man argument. Ottoman naval power in the Mediterrenean has long been recognized.

There may be an alternate and more productive way to look at this issue. Casale is appropriately critical of "Orientalist" views of the Ottomans which contrast European dynamism with Eastern conservatism. Casale himself, however, has written this book as sustained comparison between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, an explicit acceptance of the Ottomans as the proverbial "Other." What much of his narrative shows is that the Ottoman Empire was an integral part of the early modern European state system. Rather than seeing Ottoman activities in the Indian Ocean as a parallel to aggressively expansionist European states, it makes at least as much sense to view these activities as just another example of how the European state system promoted expansionism.

A vivid account of the 16th Century imperial competition between the Ottomans and Portuguese in the Indian Ocean
By jeffergray
I thoroughly enjoyed this volume, finishing it in a little over a week (aided, admittedly, by the fact that I spent half of that time on a long weekend at a seaside resort where the weather was unseasonably chilly and wet). It is well-written and was handsomely produced by the Oxford University Press, with more than twenty carefully selected illustrations that help the reader to correctly envision the warships of the Turks and Portuguese and the trading ports and fortresses of the Indian Ocean during the sixteenth century. There are also four useful but cartographically basic maps that help the reader to place the location of the ports and battles discussed.

To the extent that most western readers know anything substantial about the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, we tend to think of it as a Mediterranean and Balkan power, gradually gobbling up the remaining Christian fortresses along the coasts of Greece and Cyprus while also pushing north up the Danube Valley. But Casale's book reminds us that the Empire's growth in western Asia and north Africa during the first four decades of the sixteenth century was even more explosive.

In 1517, the Empire's eastern frontier ran across Asia Minor from roughly the Taursus Mountains in the south to Trebizond in the north. In that year, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" went to war against the Mamluk Sultanate, another Islamic power that had dominated the eastern Mediterranean since the final defeat and expulsion of the crusaders two centuries earlier. Selim's army made short work of the Mamluks, incorporating their possessions in Syria, Palestine and Egypt into his empire and thereby more than doubling its size in less than a year. In 1534, the Ottomans seized Iraq from the Safavid rulers of Persia, acquiring a foothold on the Persian Gulf at Basra, and four years later they extended their conquests to Yemen, thereby securing the northern gate to the Red Sea.

These moves brought the Ottomans into contact and then conflict with the Portuguese, who first reached India in their carracks and caravels at the very end of the fifteenth century. Within a decade, the Portuguese began to establish a string of fortresses along its western coast and went to war with the Mamluk Empire. Casale suggests that their dual objective was to enrich themselves and impoverish the Mamluks by seizing control of the East Indian spice trade. They believed that accomplishing these objectives would make possible a renewed crusade that would recover the Holy Land and secure the shorter trade route from the Mediterranean across the isthmus of Suez, down the Red Sea, and then across the Indian Ocean.

As Casale makes clear, the Ottomans likewise coveted the riches produced by the spice trade - pepper from India and Ceylon, cinnamon, cloves and camphor from the East Indies. They also had a religious-ideological objective of their own: that of ensuring the safe passage of Moslem pilgrims from India and the Indies to the Arabian holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and of protecting the holy cities themselves against possible attack by Portuguese forces sailing up the Red Sea. This great power competition between the Ottomans and the Portuguese for control of the Indian Ocean trade routes lasted from 1525-1589.

Casale's account of this long-running conflict is dramatic and vividly presented. As he summarizes an early phase of the Ottoman-Portuguese wars:

"[The years] from 1538 to 1546[] had been a period of bitter and almost continuous warfare between Istanbul and Lisbon, conducted across an enormous area spanning the full breadth of the Indian Ocean. On the high seas, Ottoman corsairs and their Muslim allies had faced off against the Portuguese fleet, staging coordinated attacks in theaters of operations from south India to the Arabian coast. In the Horn of Africa and in Southeast Asia, elite units of Ottoman and Portuguese musketeers - the sixteenth-century equivalent of commandos - had locked horns in guerrilla wars to prop up friendly local regimes and to destabilize their rivals. And from their main bases of supply in Suez and Goa, both sides had launched massive armadas, consisting of thousands of men and dozens of ships, against each other's most important maritime redoubts in Egypt and India."

Casale ably recounts the major strokes and counterstrokes launched by each side - the Ottoman expedition against Diu in India in 1538, the retaliatory Portuguese attack on Suez in 1541, the Ottoman attempts to reduce the Portuguese fortress of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf in the 1550's, and the effort by the Ottoman corsair Mir Ali in 1589 to develop the island city of Mombasa as an advanced base from which to extend Ottoman power far south along the Swahili coast of east Africa. The latter expedition went disastrously awry when a marauding (and allegedly cannibalistic) army of 20,000 Zimba warriors suddenly appeared from out of the continent's interior at exactly the wrong moment.

My only quibbles with Casale's book are that it would have been helpful if he had provided a little more detail on the origins and growth of Portugal's Indian Ocean Empire by way of background. And (perhaps understandably in light of the book's focus, as evidenced by its title) the opposing Portuguese leaders remain shadowy, in contrast to the colorful succession of Ottoman corsairs and grand viziers who dominate his account. Also, to the extent the book's title may lead you to expect accounts of Ottoman explorations of lands previously unknown to Europeans comparable to those of the Spanish, French, and British in the New World, you won't find that here. Portuguese seafarers and Moslem merchants had already trailblazed the path to India and the Indies; this book is about the commercial, military and diplomatic competition between the Portuguese and the Ottomans that resulted.

A refreshing take on the Global Age of Exploration
By Andy
Casale offers a refreshing view of an otherwise neglected period of exploration. While historians often focus on the accomplishments of Europeans starting in the 16th century, Casale focuses on the Ottoman Age of Exploration (as the title suggests). This is definitely worth a read for those interested in World History.

An Excellent Start to Learning Intermediate Russian
By Bethany McKinney Fox
This is a great tool to help you learn Russian, and is even more helpful when used in conjunction with the workbook that goes along with it. After reading this book (and doing the workbook excercises) you will have a fairly good ability to communicate in Russian about common subjects. A good thing about this book is that its author, Olga Kagan, (who I studied under at UCLA) adheres to the philosophy that learning a language shouldn't be done through mere translation (this-English-word=that-Russian-word), but should be approached by taking the words in context and by seeing how Russian phrases/words are used, and not just what they mean. The only thing lacking from this book is that there aren't enough oral exercises, but overall, if you already know basic Russian and want to move to the next level, this is an excellent way to do it.

Aircraft Flight, by R.H. Barnard, D.R. Philpott

This book is intended to provide a description on the principles of aircraft flight in physical rather than mathematical terms. The authors have included some of the more important practical aspects of aircraft flight plus examples of innovations, descriptions of which are generally only found scattered in assorted technical journals. Although it contains no mathematical analysis, the authors do included one or two simple formulae as a means of defining important terms such as "lift coefficient" and Reynolds number, which are essential to the understanding of aeronautics. The authors have concentrated on items that they consider to be either important, or interesting. They have also restricted coverage to the aerodynamics and mechanics of flight, with only a brief consideration of other aspects such as structural influences. The book is intended primarily as a general introduction for anyone interested in aircraft or contemplating a career in aeronautics. Students of aeronautical engineering should find it helpful as introductory and background reading. It should also be useful to employees in the industry such as flight crew and ground staff. It is assumed that the reader has some school background in elementary physical science and is at least vaguely familiar with concepts such as energy and momentum.
