"How to be obnoxious and pushy in thirty days or less"

This book is an obvious self-promotional vehicle for the author and has a total lack of any practical advice for the reader. Reading it is difficult, as it is filled with really obnoxious all caps and italicized words, seemingly intended to "energize" her "advertising copy" style of writing.
I found the author to be a very selfish and pushy person. Her advice centers around trying to get ahead of people in order to have a personal assistant to treat as a slave, and to impress others with your important job. This is a very short term and shallow idea of success, and I think it is almost dangerous to advise people to have that kind of attitude. Having encountered such people in the workplace, I saw them experience some limited success, but also alienate others and ultimately be quite miserable.
I'm also skeptical of her credentials- she claims she has several tv shows in "development" (This is the purgatory of television, and really means nothing) and is a freelance writer, but besides making a lot of money, she doesn't seem to have too many tangible accomplishments. I suppose that is the curse of self-help books though, no one with real success is likely to write books like this. In a nutshell, I strongly disliked this book, and I think it has limited use for anyone.

Boost in the Arm!

its not that the advice is earth shatteringly new...its not. But is the first book that I have read that has positively addressed the issues that women face in business. I love that it is a book of empowerment for women as opposed to a bitch session about how rough we have it. I love this book. One of my very favorite quotes is actually a recommended mantra...whenever you think you have made the most horrible business mistake in the world, repeat yourself "John Travolta is back. John Travolta is back". Clearly John Travolta has made some disasterous career decisions...but he is back. We too can make it back from any mistake.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK and have given to several friends.

In his book “Do Guns Make Us Free?”Firmin DeBrander addresses the puzzling fact that after several mass killings by guns, like in Sandy Hook, more states introduced legislation favorable to gun ownership than for gun control. According to the New York Times 70 measures expanded gun rights and only 39 imposed more control. The “gun show loophole” which does not require background checks for buying guns from gun show vendors, was not closed. The “Stand Your Ground” laws, used in Florida by George Zimmerman for his defense against manslaughter, had a moment of appeal. Two Democratic state senators from Colorado were recalled in 2013 . They had supported more gun control legislation. DeBrabander clarifies the puzzle by pointing out that gun ownership is part of our cultural imagination (the gun using cowboy) and our national identity (the War of Independence was started by the Minutemen). Furthermore, DeBrabander shows that gun control people face a philosophical challenge created by the fact that Americans love the idea of personal freedom while gun control requires regulation and thus imposes limits on personal freedom. The argument presented by DeBrabander is that the society envisioned by the defenders of gun rights will lead to a society where guns will be needed in every school, where schools will increasingly look like bunkers, and where people feeling threatened, even during oral arguments, will have the right to shoot opponents with the help of “Stand Your Ground” laws. Such a society, so argues DeBrabander, will not be a society where differences in opinion are discussed and debated, but a society, who under the weight of fear, will use guns to make a point. Hence pushing for less gun control is not promoting the freedom inherent in a democratic society. We need measures which create more room for peaceful debate and discussion.

Unique Take on the Gun Debate, But Insufficient Engagement with the Scholarly Literature

I received a review copy of this book from Yale University Press for review in the Journal of Value Inquiry. Parts of my review are reproduced here.

The book is divided into five chapters, each criticizing common arguments made by the gun rights movement. Although DeBrabander’s book provides a very unique approach to the question of gun rights, it is not without problems. I shall briefly outline five issues that cast doubt on the strength of his arguments.

1. One serious problem that is evident throughout DeBrabander’s book is his failure to consider crucial background issues regarding the nature of rights, their scope, and the relationship between different types of rights (e.g. basic vs. derived rights, and natural vs, positive rights). Rights-talk is used throughout the book without any situating background or explication of what is meant! An overview of these preliminary issues is absolutely necessary for any serious philosophical treatment of gun ownership, for we cannot talk about the right to own a gun unless we first know what rights are and what type of right this would be. Recognizing this, both pro-gun and anti-gun philosophers alike have put forth detailed accounts of the nature, scope, and justification of gun rights. DeBrabander doesn't.

2. One would expect an academic treatment of gun ownership from a philosophical point of view to address the arguments of actual philosophers who defend gun ownership in their professional work. Yet DeBrabander does none of this. Of the more than ten articles published by professional philosophers on the ethics of gun ownership, DeBrabander cites none of them (This includes articles that favor his own position)! Instead, the bulk of his critique of the gun rights movement is directed more towards its popular side. This might be fine for a popular level critique of popular level arguments, but it is utterly unacceptable for a scholarly work.

3. DeBrabander’s treatment of the relevant empirical issues is seriously deficient. While empirical considerations do not exhaust the philosophical side of the gun control debate, any philosophically rigorous treatment of the issue must seriously consider the empirical data. DeBrabander's interaction with the criminological literature is limited to a few pages where he criticizes John Lott’s claim that right-to-carry laws decrease crime. Even here, his critiques are superficial and mostly one-sided. He seems unfamiliar with numerous other studies corroborating Lott’s findings, as well as replies by Lott and others. One gets the impression that DeBrabander simply searched for criticisms of Lott’s work while ignoring the other side of the debate. DeBrabander also ignores an entire category of empirical considerations that are very relevant to the debate: the prevalence of defensive gun uses and the efficacy of resistance with a gun. Together, these two considerations form a key component of the self-defense argument for gun ownership, so an omission of this level is simply inexcusable.

4. The lack of engagement with the literature manifests itself in the quality of DeBrabander’s arguments. Most of his critiques of gun ownership are entirely speculative, supported by nothing more than a series of quotations or naive psychoanalysis. We are told, for instance, that guns are a sign of “insecurity” that generate “distrust” and that gun owners are “disproportionately suspicious” people who “decide they will live under the influence of fear". Where exactly is the evidence for such a bold and disparaging claim about the psychology of gun owners? We are given none.

5. Finally, while DeBrabander clearly thinks that widespread gun ownership is bad public policy, he affirms in the preface that he is “not averse to others owning guns, provided ownership is wisely regulated". But he does not tell us what “wisely regulated” means! If gun ownership is sometimes permissible, then under what circumstances may individuals own a gun? And how are we to balance this admission with the later claim that gun ownership threatens democracy, freedom, and the rule of law? The lack of clarification on these seemingly contradictory statements makes it very unclear what DeBrabander is trying to accomplish. He seems more concerned with preaching the evils of gun ownership in vague and fiery terms than with providing actual solutions to the problems they pose, solutions aimed at balancing the interests of both sides.

Needless to say, I did not find the book to be very persuasive. The value of this book is limited to its critique of popular arguments for gun ownership. Those interested in the philosophy and ethics of gun ownership are better served by looking at the existing journal literature on the topic.

A very disturbing but important book about the Israeli-Arab conflict

David Grossman is one of the three top Israeli novelists. Each tries to resolve the Israeli-Arab conflict and bring peace. The other two are Amos Oz and A. B. Yehoshua. Grossman wrote his book to show the agony suffered by both sides. The volume is vivid and disturbing. It made Grossman one of the leaders of Israel's left. It caused many Israelis to hate him, hatred that continues today. He still receives threats from fellow Jews. Readers may want to read the excellent analysis of Grossman and his writings in George Packer's article "The Unconsoled," in the September 27, 2010 edition of The New Yorker.

Grossman visited the west bank and listened to men and women, Jewish and Arab, students and teachers, old and young, and reported the bitterness of Israelis and Arabs. He tells how Arabs live, their aspiration, frustrations, bitterness, and rage. He reveals how Arab students are stopped repeatedly from attending school by Israeli soldiers. He reports how Israeli judges judge Arabs and how they are afraid to release Arabs who are obviously innocent lest they appear overly lenient to the Arab people and encourage more violence. He writes of incidences where Israeli soldiers mistreated Arabs, physically and psychologically. He gives examples of how the Israeli presence in the west bank is breeding contempt and hatred.

He recalls the statement of Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz immediately after the 1967 war. Leibowitz said that it is impossible to be occupiers and remain moral. Grossman emphasizes that "today the real enemy is not the Palestinian or the Israeli but the extremist and the fanatic on either side." Yet, these extremists have infected Israelis and Arabs, like a spreading black plague that is savaging the morality and the future of both people.

Grossman describes his meetings with Arabs at a refugee camp on the west bank, the frustrations of the women, and how the men are afraid to talk, afraid of Israelis, spies, and fellow Arabs. The women speak of returning to parts of Israel where their grandparents once lived, land they never saw. Grossman is struck by how the Arabs remind him by their looks, words, aspirations, and actions of Jews that he knows, as well as Jews in ancient and near ancient history.

He cites a scientific study of the dreams of Israeli and Arab children. Seventeen percent of the dreams of the Jewish children had meetings with Arabs; thirty percent of the Arab children dreamed of encounters with Jews. The Jewish children saw the Arabs in their dreams as criminals. The Arab children dreamed of conflicts and battles with the Israelis. "(A)mong some thousand dreams of Jewish and Arab children, there is not one which indicates a longing for peace."

He reports on his visit to a Jewish settlement on the west bank. All of the inhabitants are militants. Some tried to plant bombs and kill Arab leaders, mayors and other politicians. He met with some fifty inhabitants in a room and asked them over and over again, very politely, can you tell me how you think the Arabs feel about you settling in the west bank? They could not answer his question. They refused to consider the feelings of the Arabs. They wanted to discuss their rights. Even a so-called moderate and well-respected rabbi had strong anti-Arab views. Grossman encountered other rabbis in other settlements with similar strong destructive anti-Arab feelings. He tells of psychological studies of the adverse affects of these settlers' attitudes upon them. They want to be pious. They see themselves as following the dictates of Torah. But they are destroying themselves and chances for peace. They are demolishing the goal of Torah. They have set a cancer within their souls.

He tells what an old Arab said about a yellow wind "that will soon come, maybe in his lifetime: the wind will come from the gate of Hell." It will set "the world afire, and people will seek shelter from its heat in the caves and caverns, but even there those it seeks, those who have performed cruel and unjust deeds, there, in the cracks in the boulders, it exterminates them, one by one. After that day, Abu Harb says, the land will be covered with bodies."

Just as relevant today as it was at the time of the first Intifada. Insightful, balanced and sensitive to destinies on both sides of this tragedy. One of the most literary 'reportages' I have read, regardless of subject.
If you think Israel's border should lie east of Amman, this book may not be for you. On the other hand, if you like Amos Oz, you won't regret reading this.

The Yellow Wind

The Yellow Wind is nonfiction. The title refers to what is described in the book as the wind that comes out of Hell to consume everything in its path. It fits the message of the text. The way the yellow wind from Hell consumes everything in its path, is just like the way the cycle of violence and revenge in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

The introduction runs through some things that have happened after the book was written. Then it goes on to talk about Grossman's meetings with a group of Israel and Palestinian writers.

The book's cover has a picture of a man with angry look on his face with one of his fists raised slightly, as if to strike out at the object of his focus. The fist is set apart from the rest of the picture by black lines. I think it's symbolic of the cultures' focus on their hatred for enemies, that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict has turned the people to thoughts of revenge.

The book doesn't really have proper characters. It has characters, but none other than the author really come up more than once. The characters affect the story by living out the cycle of revenge and hate because the reader is meant to see the need to bring it to an end. I think a lot of the characters are easy to empathize with because no one is indifferent to being oppressed and injustice generally offends the moral sensibilities of readers.

Fear, hatred, and the power struggle between the Israelis and Palestinians are big themes in the book. I'd say they help drive home the point I think the book is trying to make. They are very effective. His style is a little odd. At first the events seem a little muddled and disjointed. That might have been because I wasn't used to his style. I think very accessible. Those with strong religious opinions about the things in the book might not find it so, but I think it works for almost anyone who would decide to read the book.

A quote that I think does a good job of capturing the thought of the book, "And the children listen, and are meant, it seems, to patch together some sort of philosophy and system of moral values in which one attempted murder is acceptable and another is not." I think this quote shows that things need to change because the way they are is unacceptable.
The book is set in Israel during 1980's. The author travels around and talks to people about their lives. I think the text reaches the reader easily but that's intended because the real purpose lies in the answer that it seeks.

A minor theme he did a good job was the theme of homeland. He brings it up and shows us that both people groups have very similar values because there are different stories with the different people groups that revolve around a loss of their h

I'm not a doctor. But this book saved my wife. Book is out of print. But you can get used copies here for about 10 bucks.

Excellent book. Even if it's an old one. I used this book to find out my wife had been suffering from RA Rheumatoid Arthritis that all along had been caused by food allergies. I could not believe it. You probably dont believe it either and if I was you, (and I was at one time) I wouldnt believe it either. Specially when all the doctors tell you it it not true. My wife used this book and found out she was deathly allergic to: green peppers, broccoli, peanuts and a couple of other things. When she was able to close her mouth, (and mine, from the surprise) she had no more pain. The doctors said it was "spontaneous remission". They were wrong. It was the chemicals (natural ones) in the food that were causing an auto immune reaction. (read the book for more info). I promised her I would always tell the story. You got joint pain and don't know why and all the doctors can do is give you heavy duty meds that are expensive and destroy your stomach and intestines? Then read and try the book. It takes a couple of weeks to do it. Worse that can happen is, WHO KNOWS! (maybe you die? Maybe you get better? I'm not a doctor just a happy guy that saw how the process worked on my wife.) The book does not tell you to take any medicines or anything. It eliminates probably causes of joint inflammation by trial and error. It takes 7 days to find out if it works. Less than 10 bucks too much to pay for a possible alternative to costly autoimmune suppressant meds?

excellent guide to treat arthritis and other ailments

I have read the book and applied elimination diet and discovered I am allergic to dairy. Thanks to this book I do not have to take medicine and have no more pain. I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

An important collection of writings

"A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.," edited by James M. Washington, is an impressive volume. This book brings together essays, speeches, sermons, interviews, and excerpts from King's books. Together, these many documents offer insights into the life and philosophy of a giant of the civil rights movement in the United States.
The book includes the "I Have a Dream" speech, the letter from Birmingham jail, the "Playboy" interview, and more. There are even fascinating transcripts from two television appearances.
This is a thought-provoking collection. I was fascinated by King's strong critique of that part of the white Christian establishment which opposed his movement. It is also intriguing to read that, apart from the Bible, King would choose Plato's "Republic" if he were to be marooned on the proverbial desert island with only one book. Also noteworthy is the emergence of King's multi-faith, global vision of humanity.
This is an important volume for those interested in African-American studies, 20th century U.S. history, or progressive currents in Christian theology. But more than that, "A Testament of Hope" is truly a testament for all people.

Essential reading for human rights advocates

I learned more about Dr. King and his philosophies by reading his actual words than I could have learned reading a history or biography.
I was surprised to learn that Dr King's journey was a long one even before civil rights movement, that he studied many schools of philosophical and religious thought. I was deeply impressed by his gifts with language, the ability to convey ideas in ways anyone can understand, and to inspire. Any writer could learn by studying his work.
If you are interested in human rights questions, I recommend reading this piece by piece, though it is a large volume. So much of what King said isn't limited to the movements of 50 years ago, but to the ongoing struggle for human dignity and equality.

An Indispensible Collection

A Testament of Hope is indispensible for a complete understanding of MLK Jr. the man. He was so much more than a monolithic figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a pastor, theologian, philosopher, diplomat, husband, and father. A Testament of Hope helps the reader to grasp the multifaceted life of this icon of the twentieth century. This book lets the reader into the very human life of MLK Jr. Nowhere have I discovered a more cogent explanation of passive resistance than in the various speeches and essays contained in this book. If you are engaged in the struggle for civil rights or if you seek to better understand modern humanity more completely add this book to your library and consult it often.

Each entry in this fictional diary of one Bernardo Soares represents an attempt to create a distinct biography, for Soares lives according to the maxim: "Give to each emotion a personality, to each state of mind a soul." Through every rumination he records Soares longs to father someone because he is "nobody, absolutely nobody." His monotonous work as a bookkeeper in a Lisbon office and his solitary, celibate existence have contributed to the dissolution of his identity. Yet this grants him the ultimate imaginative freedom: "Because I am nothing, I can imagine myself to be anything." One effect of this freedom is a sense of exhaustion before the sheer number of possibilities for being. Another is a sense--at once paternal and disturbingly erotic--of intimacy with the whole human race. Of sleep Soares muses: "When someone sleeps they become a child. . . . I experience an immense, boundless tenderness for all of infantile humanity." More elegantly translated here than in the recent Pantheon edition, this novel presents paradoxes of identity that are more than just an occasion for meditation for Pessoa (1888-1935), one of Portugal's greatest writers and among this century's most enigmatic. They parallel Pessoa's own lived experience. He created several distinct personalities--called "heteronyms"--through which he wrote in an astonishing variety of styles and even in different languages. Soares represents a "semiheteronym," perhaps closest of all to the "real" Pessoa. Whoever Pessoa was, he managed to address through Soares's abstruse, at times excruciatingly precious musings the essential condition of human identity as represented in Western literature. Soares's separation from a common order might be the stuff of tragedy but for the fact that "my self-imposed rupture with any contact with things, led me precisely to what I was trying to flee." For all his quixotic tilting at windmills, Soares admits: "Whenever I see the figure of a young girl in the street . . . I wonder, however idly, how it would be if she were mine." Yet Sancho Panza's suit never hangs on Soares's skinny bones, and this is his dilemma. He is stalled between the poles of tragedy and comedy: "I can be neither nothing nor everything: I'm just the bridge between what I do not have and what I do not want." And herein lies the reason for the multifarious forms of his--and our--disquiet.

Recognized as Portugal's greatest poet since Camoens, Pessoa (1888-1935) wrote poetry under various heteronyms to whom he attributed biographies different from his own. Likewise, this rich and rewarding notebook kept by the solitary, celibate, and semi-alcoholic Pessoa during the last two decades of his life, is written under yet another heteronym (Bernardo Soares), a Lisbon bookkeeper with a position that is like a siesta and a salary that allows him to go on living. Soares knows no pleasure like that of books, yet he reads little. Like Camus, he is irritated by the happiness of men who don't know they are wretched, and his main objective is to perceive tedium in such a way that it ceases to hurt. There are no gossipy details in this heteronymous memoir, only the cerebral workings of a first-rate thinker on the dilemma of life. Full of fresh metaphors and unique perceptions, The Book of Disquiet can be casually scanned and read profitably even at random.

A beautifully fine and unique book

Pessoa was a true acrobat of the imagination. The Book of Disquiet is a collection of epiphanic journal or diary prose kept by Pessoa and found decades after his death. The prose is truly some of the most gorgeous musings about everyday life and existence that any reader could ever find. The poet's world is laid out exquisitly and paradoxically for the entire benefit of those who read.I can't say I've ever found such beauty in the pages of a book before. If you like literature albeit simple or complex this book is something that you will immediately cherish for a very long time.

I find the Richard Zenith translation to be much more lush and lyrical than Margaret Jull Costa's:
The Book of Disquiet (Penguin Classics)

That being said, translation is an art of interpretation; this has some of the same syntactical constructions found in her Saramgo work (excellent, by the way) that don't work quite as well with Pessoa lexical peculiarities.

a great, neglected writer

I first read of Pessoa in Geoff Dyer's biography of Lawrence. The Book Of Disquiet is genuinely original. In it Pessoa expounds his notion that a human being consists of several sensibilities irreconcilable with one another. For each of the individuals comprising Pessoa, Pessoa coins an appropriate (though not epithetic) "heteronym," of which there are more than a few. Pessoa regards the notion of a coherent personality--rather than a committee of warring selves--as an invitation to ignore any experience that does not easily consist with our notion of own characters, and thus an invitation both to dishonesty and to the rejection of experience. In this he is very close to the Buddhist notion that the Self is a fictional solidification of that which is eternally in flux. Pessoa has an uncanny intimacy with his own self and a very deep and moving commitment to the experience of being himself. This is a remarkable, deep, wise book.

So far I've only read the sample.....

I tend to wait until I read the whole book but due to financial restraints I'm unsure when I'll get it, however I felt I needed to address something in the book.
NO professional businessman would joke about an applicant needing to sleep with him for a job. Especially since he was basically stalking her at her job over the previous days. She could easily sue him for sexual harassment. And unless Kyle is the main boss of the company (again I remind you I only read the sample), he's in serious danger of being fired for his "joke".

enjoying this series

OOh I forgot about Layla and Jared's connection!

I have been enjoying these books in the Alpha series, I love how the boys all connect and are fiercely protective of their ladies! The girls don't have a chance! LOL

Layla, upon meeting Kyle, keeps her guard up, although she doesn't know it yet, she is just about to meet the man of her dreams, she just didn't know it yet !

Of course we briefly met Kyle in Elisa's story, but we didn't really get much of a feel of him!

He of course, was a good guy, who was ready for a one nighter with Layla, but things don't always work out how you want them!

The unexpected interview took me by surprise too! didn't see that coming!

I thought they really connected and when her ex came back on the scene, Oh my poor Layla, but strong dependable Kyle wow he came through!

When John came back again, flipping heck how the hell can you make a decision like that! poor Layla, I was feeling her pain every step of the way!

It was nice to catch up with Ethan and Sadie, as well as Jared and Elisa, things are still going well for them!

Just downloaded Cassie and Janet's books and guess i'll be catching up with them now!
