Realism, Science, and Pragmatism (Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy)From Routledge

This collection of original essays aims to reinvigorate the debate surrounding philosophical realism in relation to philosophy of science, pragmatism, epistemology, and theory of perception. Questions concerning realism are as current and as ancient as philosophy itself; this volume explores relations between different positions designated as ‘realism’ by examining specific cases in point, drawn from a broad range of systematic problems and historical views, from ancient Greek philosophy through the present. The first section examines the context of the project; contributions systematically engage the historical background of philosophical realism, re-examining key works of Aristotle, Descartes, Quine, and others. The following two sections epitomize the central tension within current debates: scientific realism and pragmatism. These contributions address contemporary questions of scientific realism and the reality of the objects of science, and consider whether, how or the extent to which realism and pragmatism are compatible. With an editorial introduction by Kenneth R. Westphal, these fourteen original essays provide wide-ranging, salient insights into the status of realism today.

Review

"This is a first-rate collection of essays on the general issue of realism, on the relation of realism to contemporary philosophy of science and epistemology, and on the challenge that has been made to traditional realism by classical pragmatism and neo-pragmatism. The contributors are among the leading scholars in the field, and their essays advance the debates in ways that will provoke response and further inquiry. Anyone interested in the topic of realism, its history and current controversies, will benefit from paying the close attention that these essays deserve." ―John Ryder, American University of Ras al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates

Fatherland: A Novel, by Robert Harris

Fatherland is set in an alternative world where Hitler has won the Second World War. It is April 1964 and one week before Hitler's 75th birthday. Xavier March, a detective of the Kriminalpolizei, is called out to investigate the discovery of a dead body in a lake near Berlin's most prestigious suburb.

As March discovers the identity of the body, he uncovers signs of a conspiracy that could go to the very top of the German Reich. And, with the Gestapo just one step behind, March, together with an American journalist, is caught up in a race to discover and reveal the truth -- a truth that has already killed, a truth that could topple governments, a truth that will change history.

From Publishers Weekly
An eerie, detailed alternate history serves as the backdrop for this otherwise conventional crime thriller. The setting is Berlin, 1964, some 20 years after the Third Reich's victory in WW II. Germany and the U.S., the world's two superpowers, find themselves in a cold war resulting from a nuclear stalemate; but U.S. President Joseph P. Kennedy is soon to visit Berlin for an historic summit meeting with Hitler, clearing the way for detente. Meanwhile, cynical police detective Xavier March investigates the drowning of Josef Buhler, former state secretary in the General Government. When the Gestapo takes over the case--ruling it suicide--March continues his investigation at the risk of his life, uncovering a deadly conspiracy at the highest levels of the Reich. With the help of American reporter Charlotte Maguire, he finds hard evidence of the wartime extermination of Europe's Jews, a secret that Buhler and his colleagues have been murdered to protect. Of course March and Maguire fall in love along the way. Harris ( Selling Hitler ) generates little suspense in this tale beyond his piecemeal rendering of the novel's unusual historical setting. The characters are flat and the plot largely predictable. And readers may well question the taste of using the Holocaust as the point of departure for a rather insubstantial, derivative thriller. 75,000 first printing; BOMC selection.

From Library Journal
The year is 1964. The setting is Berlin. JFK's father, Joe Kennedy, is president. Edward VIII is king, Wallis his queen. Adolf Hitler is about to celebrate his 75th birthday. In this thriller with a twist, the stalemate which ended World War II has evolved into a cold war, not between the Soviet Union and the United States, but between the Third Reich and America. Police investigator Xavier March handles a case involving the death of a prominent Nazi, an apparent suicide. The trail leads to other suicides, accidental deaths, a numbered vault in Zurich, and a beautiful American reporter. March discovers the pattern behind the deaths and locates incriminating papers exposing the Holocaust, which, because Germany didn't lose the war, has been kept secret for 20 years. Harris, author of the nonfiction title Selling Hitler ( LJ 5/15/86), is clearly well versed in the operations and machinations of the Nazi regime. He uses this knowledge to create a realistic and frightening world in which we all could be living. Recommended. BOMC selection; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 3/1/92.

From Kirkus Reviews
There are no happy novels set in Berlin, but Harris (Selling Hitler, 1986, on the diaries forgery) has managed a novel that dances on Hitler's grave with amusing success. Naturally, the whole book is entirely depressing, depression being the keynote of Hitlerian fantasias; its leading tones were struck earlier by Orwell's 1984 and le Carr‚'s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Harris's novel is set in 1964--Germany has won WW II, and this is the weekend of Hitler's 75th birthday, with huge celebrations ready to blow. After defeating Russia, Germany has formed a European trading bloc with 12 Western nations; German is the second language in all schools; everyone drives German cars, watches German TV, and so on. Switzerland alone is neutral, afloat on the Wehrmacht's stalemate in its cold war with the US. Tying in with Hitler's birthday is the announcement that--to reinforce d‚tente between the two countries--US President Joseph P. Kennedy has been invited to Berlin. But that d‚tente is threatened by the murders of two retired high officials, and Xavier March, homicide investigator with the Berlin Kriminalpolizei, lands the job of tracking down the killers. March is divorced and disaffected, and his ten-year-old son hates him for not being a super-Nazi like himself. Just as March is getting ahead in the case, he is taken off it by Globus, a top pig in the Gestapo. But March is too far in to stop. And he's fallen in with the beautiful American journalist ``Charlie'' Maguire, a smart and feisty woman who's always ready to prick March's Nazi chauvinism. The big secret: March has stumbled on the great Nazi coverup of the gas chambers, with ghastly proofs of it hidden in a numbered Swiss account. Farsighted readers know that massive dystopian evil such as Winston Smith faced in 1984 can provide no happy end. But only a Schweinehund wouldn't like this springtime for Hitler, with its waltzes through the Holocaust to the tunes of Lehr's The Merry Widow. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. A puff read about something very serious.
By Amazon Customer
"Meh", is a good word for this book.

It's entertaining, but not very good.
You're in a world where Germany won WWII, and it's not nearly as cool as "The Man in the High Castle".

SPOILERS:

Strap in for a moderately thrilling plot, where you constantly forget which generic German guy is which, and the not so stunning conclusion that the Nazis killed the Jews that everyone knew they were "displacing".
Cringe as the main character beds a much younger and better looking woman, in a cliche, could-only-be-written-by-a-middle-aged-man, style plot.
Wonder if it's terrible that such a frothy book about something so terrible exists?

Or just save yourself some money and watch the better written Man in the High Castle. Seriously, that show is awesome.

Incredible read!! Masterfully written!
By Bill L.
Historically quite accurate, which helps keep the story grounded and the mystery/conspiracy thrilling. The best part of this text is the misdirection in the plot. At face value, the story is thrilling and fast paced, with no filler. Without giving anything away, only at the end (through hindsight) did I realize the signs that lead to where things ended up. Masterfully well written, if you've heard of Robert Harris, start here!!

What a quandary!
By WB, Zeno
Where to begin? Well, the book is alt his: in it, Germany won WW2 (although she's still fighting a lower-intensity war with the USSR somewhere along what would seem from a map to be the Volga, although a casual remark in p. 18 mentions "American -backed Soviet guerrillas east of the Urals", and there's another reference to "the dull struggle with the Reds on the Urals Front" in p. 84), developed the atomic bomb roughly at the same time as the US and ICBMs much earlier, and controls Europe trough a German-dominated European Community based on a Rome Treaty (in the West she has formally annexed only Luxembourg, and of course Alsace-Lorraine). Goering died in 1951, Himmler in 1962 (his successor is Heydrich, not assassinated in the Protectorate in this timeline, and rumored to be slated for succeeding the 75-year-old Hitler). Basically, the US having defeated Japan, and China being apparently a shambles, this is a bipolar world (German-led Europe and the US), complete with a nuclear stalemate and a Cold War (whence a to-be-held-summit, to seek dtente).
Against this backdrop, on April 14, 1964, six days before Hitler's birthday celebrations and with the US President Joseph Kennedy (yes, the father) coming to Berlin in September for summit, a man is found drowned in the Havel. The case is investigated by Reichskriminalpolizei Investigator Xavier March, and what follows leads him to the realization, at the end of the book, that the Holocaust has indeed taken place: in Germany the official line is that "the Jews were sent East", but nevertheless mothers threaten rebellious sons with a "behave or you'll go up the chimney".

To say more is useless, as the book from then on becomes a mix of PP and thriller interspeded with seamlessly integrated flashbacks that permit you to partially reconstruct what has happened between mid-1942 (it's clear that the Germans captured Stalingrad and their summer Caucasus offensive succeeded) and the present murder, and then proceeds, always in a deftly depicted rigidly dictatorial police-state Greater German Empire, and at a stedily accelerating pace, to its (I would say open and deeply moving) conclusion.

I enjoyed the book enormously: for anyone intererested enough in the history of the period, finding names like Globocnic (who for example is mentioned -with a different spelling- once by Jodl, I think, to Hitler as a "real scoundrel", in Guderian's "Panzer Leader"), or allusions to episodes like the theft of Veit Stoss' altarpiece from Cracow's (Krakau in the book) Church of Our Lady, is to become aware of some as it were unknown intellectual friend (in this case Harris) who shares your interests, at least as far as having done -for a non-historian- an enormous amount of research, and with whom you could talk and learn from. For me, that's the key of my delight in the story: the amount of subtle details of a period that fascinates me. As for the purely PP part of the plot, that is, if you abstract from its subject matter, I agree there are some technically better books around, but not many with such a degree of suspense: this one is a real page turner.

Just to give you an idea of my tastes, I've read part of one of Turtledove's alt his series (the one that begins with "So Few Remain", in which the South wins the Civil War), but gave up after the 3rd or 4th volume ("Walk in Hell" or "Blood and Iron", I don't remember the titles, I gave them away): I just wasn't interested in the myriad subplots involving ordinary people, and there was too little macrohistory. I also read the first two books of a WW2 series in which the Japanese sink three US aircraft carriers and occupy Pearl Harbour, but loose the war anyway, which however lasts two years longer (I've forgotten the author's and the books' names). I quit for the same reason. But Harris' book is in a completely different league from them, and also from the scores of more detailed military alt his of the European theater of operations, Eastern or Western (by, say, Tsouras and his colleagues or imitators), or the fewer fully professional mil his, although for me they are more interesting than Tutledove's & alia microhistorical approch as they are more concise. It may seem a contradiction to downplay Turtledove's microhistory and praise Harris' subtle detail, but in the former events just happen, whereas in the latter there is a reason, a cause and and a fierce determination. Also, "Fatherland" is told in a very old-fashioned way: the good guys are clearly set apart from the bad ones, and there are no antiheroes; in the others, alt his is like real his, full of greynesses, contradictions and ambiguities.

Charlene Vickers and Justine Cardello have written however thoughtful one-star reviews, and they have valid points. So what's happening?

(1) As for the improbability of Charlotte Maguire's being a female "star reporter" in 1964 (not 1967 as CV writes), I agree it's a weakness in the plot. However, Maguire does say that nobody has heard of her agency, World European Features, and that it's an outfit with just two men with a telex machine in an office in the wrong side of town, and that she was picked as correspondent because she was the only one that could get a German visa. Besides, her father was a Liberal Undersecretary of State, so she must have got some political education and known some people. This doesn't detract from the value of CV's point, but shows Harris was aware of the problem and tried to minimize it.

(2) I think what they (and other reviewers) say about the Holocaust being impossible to conceal is debatable; it may be so in our world (but wait for the current crisis to deepen and the depression to really bite; then we'll see a dramatic increase in the revisionists' numbers). Remember also that even now most (I think) Muslims genuinely believe it didn't happen, as Turks to this day sincerely believe that the Armenian genocide is a fabrication. And European liberal intellectuals believed Stalin's gulags were a Western propaganda invention until the secret Khrushev speech. And how many US citizens are aware of the atrocities committed, say, in Vietnam? I'm not saying that they were due to a genocidal policy, but they were committed -and silenced-. How many are aware of Chomski's existence (again, I'm not saying that he's right, but his views about the US deserve a national debate). And how widespread was the American reaction to the French atrocities during the war for Algerian independence? And how many know that presumably 2 million Germans died when 16 million of them were expelled -whether justly or unjustly is beside the point- from their former homes? My point is, you CAN fool most of the people most of the time except in basic matters such as whether they have enough to eat or can repay their mortgage. I think media coverage determines what is considered to be PC or outrageous, independently of what's really going on. And this in our world! Think of another in which Germany had won the war! Everybody could have suspected (and did so) all right, but where would the aerial reconaissance planes have flown from? How many outside people would the Polish partisans have been able to contact? Who would have been admitted to the four Eastern Komissariats to count how many Jews, if any, really remained? And where would the archival evidence of the Nuremberg Trials have come from? Reread p. 206 of the MMP edition, where March questions Charlotte about the real fate of the "vanished" millions of Jews. The only info available in an mildly anti-semitic US comes from some half-deranged fugitives beyond the Urals, but the German Ambassador flatly denies their claims. "Pure propaganda", he says (and the Germans, after the British entirely false construction of the child-maiming, nun-raping, village-burning "Hun" image of WW1, had every reason to distrust foreign propaganda). Besides, deep inside, as is expressed several times, everybody more or less knows (i.e. Fiebes, in page 96: "A lot of [racial legislation] refers to Jews, and the Jews, as we know" -he gave a wink- "have all gone east"). And, most inportant of all, nobody, except a few very decent people like Marsh and Maguire, really cares, as Charlotte herself says. As for the US Jews not receiving news of/from their relatives, the Nazis never kept their racial laws secret: it was common knowledge that Jews were grossly abused, interned in concentration camps, deported, etc. The only secret was their systematic mass extermination. In our timeline, 2 million Gypsies were murdered alongside a maximum of 6 million Jews (not 14 million, as JC writes). Have you ever heard anything about it, dear average reader?
So I think that point, while controversial, shouldn't be considered an important flaw in the plot.

(3) Both CV and JC say that the characters are cutouts, flat, they don'e evoke any empathy. Well, that's a personal opinion. I really cared for March (although rather less for Maguire), Nebe didn't seem to be such a detestable german, and I even detected a mellowing of the regime in Krebs, the new-generation "gone soft" Nazi. De gustibus non est disputandum.

(4) Some other reviewers write that this story is a bad rehash of Orwell's "1984". Though to be compared with such a masterpiece would be no demerit, IMO Orwell's is a deeply philosophical novel (for me, its most important parts are the chapters of Goldstein's mythical book), whereas Harris' is an unabashedly alt his thriller, and nothing else. They belong to two entirely different genres. Furthermore, it's true that Orwell took his inspiration from Nazi Germany and the USSR, but his was a wild extrapolation towards power gone mad, whereas Harris pictures an earthy state governed by corrupt leaders and already in the process of being further corrupted by "softness" and boredom, March's son attitude and deeds notwithstanding.

(5) There are some inconsistencies (as for example the timing of Kennedy's visit, which at times seem inminent although it's 5 months away), but they are minor.

Summary: if you're like me, (definitely) buy and (hopefully) enjoy this book as much as I did a few years ago.

Really sweet Boy Love!
By Michelle
Awww I really enjoyed this manga. This is exactly the kind of manga that makes my heart flutter. After reading a lot of Yaoi this is a refreshing change. If you want a simple story on the pretenses of some mild boy love with interesting characters, this will more than suffice.

The plot could be called some-what boring. It involving high school boys in the baseball club. Most of the events take place either in the club room or on the club grounds. Nothing dramatically happens. They talk. They train. They play baseball. And while that's happening you get an insight into the characters thoughts and emotions.

There are two main characters. One is the 'Prince' who is athletic, good looking and friends with everyone and the other is Hikita. Now Hikita has a reputation of scowling at people when he's nervous, so everyone thinks he has a scary face. Even though he's kind and hard working, everyone avoids him. The only person who knows his true self is Imai (the prince).

I like how the mangaka portrays Imai. You get an insight into his mind. He likes Hikita - scowling face and all - and becomes monopolizing over keeping his true self from everyone. Straight away you find out how Imai wants to 'see' and 'hold' Hikita. Although he doesn't act on his thoughts...it's clear that he likes him, very much.

Now about the art. The art doesn't appeal to me at all. But i some-what feel that the mangaka wasn't trying to win her fans over with the art. She was trying to express a cute little story about an ugly guy who wins the heart of the popular guy. Even though the art was plain, sketchy and dull i still found Hikita cute at times and after a while, he really warmed up to me. I will say this though: if you're looking for bi-shounens...this isn't the manga for you.

My last thoughts for this manga is it's really refreshing and a joy to read. I found myself smiling at many scenes and wanting to follow this series through and see their relationship develop more*. I liked the simplicity of the plot, the characters and above all: the romance.

*This is volume one, the story continues in volume two and three.

It's different from the usual yaoi, it's sweet, deep and "true".
It's the first of three volumes, I can't wait to read them all!

Love this one.
By Niki
What I love about this one are the characters. Hikita is such a unique uke. It is so easy to love this shy, lonely, plain and earnest boy, who is so devoted to the sports he love even if he is no good in it. I love those scenes where Hikita patiently cleaned the dirty baseballs every night. He is willing to do all the dirty jobs to be involved in baseball. Imai is your usual good looking seme. I love the developing romance between these boys, the quiet tension as they struggle with their feelings. I wish there is more on these two as this is one young love I would love to see last until they are old. The plot has a simplicity, a quiet honesty which I love. I also like the artwork, the style which I thought fitted the mood of the story.

Piano Starts Here: The Young Art Tatum, by Robert A. Parker

Regardless of whether they’ve heard of jazz or Art Tatum, young readers will appreciate how Parker uses simple, lyrical storytelling and colorful, energetic ink-and-wash illustrations to show the world as young Art Tatum might have seen it. Tatum came from modest beginnings and was nearly blind, but his passion for the piano and his acute memory for any sound that he heard drove him to become a virtuoso who was revered by both classical and jazz pianists alike. Included in the back matter is a biography and bibliography.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Parker, who illustrated Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan’s Sibert Honor Book Action Jackson (2002), contributes both words and pictures in this heartfelt portrait of jazz great Tatum. Parker pushes the limits of the book’s nonfiction cataloguing by speaking in the pianist’sfirst-person voice, but an author’s note and a solid bibliography set the episodes in a framework of established facts. The vibrant scenes, in Parker’s familiar style of scratched ink lines and watercolor washes, show young Tatum playing at home for his dancing parents, at church for a full choir, and at local clubs, where he is discovered and his international career begins. In some images, crowds of dancers and musicians create a swirl of animated motion; in others, Parker sets Tatum, who was nearly blind, against a deep, moody, abstract background of shifting colors. Throughout, the simple, direct language shows the power of the music for both Tatum and his listeners. “When I am at the piano . . . I play clouds of notes, rivers of notes . . . I forget that my eyes aren’t good. I have everything I need.” Cue up the music; children will best appreciate this beautiful tribute with an earful of Tatum at the keyboard. Grades 2-4. --Gillian Engberg

Review
Starred review, Kirkus Reviews, December 15, 2007:
“Fusing Parker’s artistic talent and passion for jazz (he’s a musician, too), this sensitively embellished biography is totally on time.”

Starred review, Booklist, February 2, 2008:
“The simple, direct language shows the power of the music for both Tatum and his listeners.”

Starred review, School Library Journal, February 2008:
“Breathing life into words about music for young children is never easy, but Parker makes it appear effortless.”

Review, The San Francisco Chronicle, February 24, 2008:
"It's a joyful portrait of an innovative artist who was peerless in music ... A jazz musician himself, Parker brings a deep love and understanding to his subject."

The Boyhood of a Prodigy
By Ben Sonnenberg
A book that tells of the childhood of the great jazz piano player, Art Tatum (1909-1956), who, though stricken with blindness when very young, went on to become a keyboard wonder. Beautifully illustrated and sensitively written, it fills you with joy and an urge to listen, or re-listen, to a miraculous musician.

This book, written in a gentle, sing song tone was very inspiring!
By Deb
Art Tatum was a little boy born in Toledo. His father was a mechanic and his mother, who loved to sing in church, did a lot of cleaning. His mother played the piano, but mostly it sat "quietly in the corner," until one day he became tall enough to hit the keys on the keyboard. He banged at it, played with one finger, two fingers and before you could wink an eye it started to sound very good. Even his mother said it did. He loved to play on the piano and didn't care much about night or day and because his eyes were so bad he really couldn't tell the difference.

"Don't wear out that piano today," his father said to him before he left for work. Art just loved his piano. By the time he was ten he was asked to play in church. A little case of jitters immediately went away when he touched the keyboard. Later he was asked to play at the YMCA, then at a bake sale and even someone's birthday party. "My, my, isn't he something," his mother gushed. More and more he was asked to play until he became famous, but he still remembered and loved "all the people who helped" him.

This was a wonderful story. It was written in a gentle, sing song tone and was quite inspiring. The watercolors meshed quite well with the text. In the back of the book Robert Andrew Parker writes about actually meeting and listening to Art play. There is a brief, but very interesting biography of art and a bibliography. This book would be very appealing to any jazz fan and will be appreciated and loved even by those unacquainted with his work.

Great story, phenomonal artwork
By John Q. Walker
The story of Art Tatum has been told too rarely -- it's a delight to have this wonderful book written by an impassioned author. Even more amazing is the gorgeous artwork, also done by Mr. Parker. Strongly recommended.

“All that have ever tried to impose change in their organization will immediately recognize and truly value the in-depth knowledge and experience captured in this book. It contains a collection of eye-openers that is a treasure chest for pioneers of new organizational ideas, A fantastic toolbox for use in future missions!”
—Lise B. Hvatum, product development manager, Schlumberger

“If you have need of changing your organization, and especially of introducing new techniques, then you want to understand what is in this book. It will help you avoid common pitfalls that doom many such projects and will show you a clear path to success. The techniques are derived from the experience of many individuals and organizations. Many are also fun to apply. This stuff is really cool—and really hot.”
—Joseph Bergin, professor of computer science, Pace University, New York

“If change is the only guarantee in life, why is it so hard to do? As this book points out, people are not so much resistant to change itself as they are to being changed. Mary Lynn and Linda have successfully used the pattern form to capture and present the recurring lessons of successful change efforts and have placed a powerful knowledge resource in the hands of their readers.”
—Alan O'Callaghan, researcher, Software Technology Research Laboratory, De Montfort University, United Kingdom

“The most difficult part of absorbing patterns, or any technology, into an organization is overcoming the people issues. The patterns in this book are the documentation of having gone through that experience, giving those that dare push the envelope a head start at success.”—David E. DeLano, IBM Pervasive Computing

“If you have ever wondered how you could possibly foster any cultural changes in your organization, in this book you will find a lot of concrete advice for doing so. I recommend that everyone read this book who has a vast interest in keeping his or her organization flexible and open for cultural change.”
—Jutta Eckstein, Independent Consultant, Objects In Action Author of Agile Software Development in the Large

48 Patterns for Driving and Sustaining Change in Your Organization

Change. It's brutally tough to initiate, even harder to sustain. It takes too long. People resist it.

But without it, organizations lose their competitive edge. Fortunately, you can succeed at making change. In Fearless Change, Mary Lynn Manns and Linda Rising illuminate 48 proven techniques, or patterns, for implementing change in organizations or teams of all sizes, and show you exactly how to use them successfully.

Find out how to

  • Understand the forces in your organization that drive and retard change
  • Plant the seeds of change
  • Drive participation and buy-in, from start to finish
  • Choose an "official skeptic" to sharpen your thinking
  • Make your changes appear less threatening
  • Find the right timing and the best teaching moments
  • Sustain your momentum
  • Overcome adversity and celebrate success

Inspired by the "pattern languages" that are transforming fields from software to architecture, the authors illuminate patterns for every stage of the change process: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. These flexible patterns draw on the experiences of hundreds of leaders. They offer powerful insight into change-agent behavior, organizational culture, and the roles of every participant.

Best of all, they're easy to use—and they work!

From the Inside Flap

...there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order, this lukewarmness arising partly from fear of their adversaries...and partly from the incredulity of mankind, who do not truly believe in anything new until they have had actual experience of it.
—Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince

You miss one hundred percent of the shots you never take.
—Wayne Gretzky, Hall of Fame hockey player

Since you picked up this book, we assume that you've tried to introduce something new into your organization. Maybe you were successful or maybe you were not completely happy with the result. Change is hard. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the people, just like you, those "powerless leaders," who have had some success in their attempts to introduce a new idea, could sit down with you and share their secrets? This book will provide the next best thing. We've gathered strategies from those successful people so you can take advantage of their experience.

We've been working on introducing new ideas into the workplace for some time. Mary Lynn Manns is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, whose recent doctoral work concerned this topic. Linda Rising is an independent consultant who has experience introducing new ideas both in academia and industry. Together with all the others who have shared their experiences with us, we have many years of documented successes.

Each technique or strategy we have collected is written as a pattern—a form of knowledge management for capturing a recurring, successful practice. The patterns in this book are the result of years of documenting our observations, hearing from people who have introduced new ideas, reading a variety of views on the topics of change and influence, studying how change agents throughout history have tackled the problems they faced, and sharing our work for comments and feedback. This book, the final product, does not simply reflect our ideas but includes those of many different people in many different organizations throughout the world. Expert change leaders are likely to say "I do that!" when they read many of these techniques. We will take this comment as a tribute to our work because our goal was to identify tried and true practices, not just a collection of good ideas that may or may not work.

The idea of documenting patterns for successful solutions to recurring problems was introduced by a building architect named Christopher Alexander. Even though we are not architects, a number of us in the software development community have adopted Alexander's approach as a way to capture known solutions for software architecture, software design, testing, customer interaction, and other aspects of software development. The introduction of new ideas is, of course, not limited to the software area, but it's where we both began to see a new source for important and useful patterns.

We intend this book for business practitioners rather than academic scholars, so we have chosen not to cite sources inside the text. However, we are always happy to answer any questions about the specific sources and the patterns. This work is built on research, including that of Robert Cialdini, Malcolm Gladwell, Geoffrey Moore, E.M. Rogers, Peter Senge, and many others. We have included a complete list of citations in the References section, if you would like to read further.

The patterns are listed alphabetically, with a brief summary, on the inside front and back covers of the book. Pattern names include a page reference where the complete pattern may be found, for example, Fear Less(?). As we describe pattern uses and experience reports, you will see a pattern reference and you can turn to the appropriate page and read more about the pattern. This book can thus become a reference after you have read the initial chapters. When looking for the solution to a particular problem, you can simply skim the summaries and refer to the complete pattern description for a more detailed explanation.

This pattern collection has evolved over several years thanks to many pattern originators and countless others who have provided comments, pattern uses, and other feedback. Even though the book has now been published, we continue to care for these patterns and would like to hear from all of you, our readers. As Christopher Alexander noted:

We may then gradually improve these patterns which we share, by testing them against experience: we can determine, very simply, whether these patterns make our surroundings live, or not, by recognizing how they make us feel.

Fear Less: Introducing New Ideas into Organizations48 patterns for driving and sustaining change in your organization

Change. It's brutally tough to initiate, even harder to sustain. It takes too long. People resist it. But without it, organizations die. Fortunately, you can succeed at making change. In Fear Less, Linda Rising and Mary Lynn Manns reveal 48 patterns of behavior associated with successful change in knowledge-driven organizations, and show exactly how to use them in your organization.

Find out how to

  • Understand the forces in your organization that drive and retard change
  • Plant the seeds of change
  • Drive participation and buy-in, from start to finish
  • Choose an "official skeptic" to sharpen your thinking
  • Make your changes appear less threatening
  • Find the right timing and the best "teaching moments"
  • Sustain your momentum
  • Handle adversity, celebrating success

Inspired by the "pattern languages" that are transforming fields from software to architecture, the authors illuminate patterns for every stage of the change process: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. These flexible patterns draw on the experiences of hundreds of leaders. They offer powerful insight into change agent behavior, organizational culture, and the roles of every participant. Best of all, they're easy to use—and they work!

Change will always be hard, but this book helps a lot
By Michael Cohn
Change is hard. I've been part of companies that merged, were acquired, acquired others, downsized drastically, changed the CEO, moved corporate headquarters to another state and completely changed their target market. The change was difficult in each of these circumstances. That's not particularly surprising. What is surprising is that change is also difficult when doing something as seemingly simple as changing the company health plan. I wish I'd read this book before going through those changes.

A large part of my current work is in helping companies manage the transition from how they currently develop software to developing software with an "agile process." The book codified some of the things I've done for years without thinking about why but more importantly it also presented ideas I hadn't thought of. For example, the "Champion Skeptic" pattern says to designate a skeptical, strong opinion leader to be the "official skeptic." I've always made a point of involving these skeptics because they can become your best advocates if you convert them. However, I've experimented with the idea as presented here and it works well.

Change will remain hard, even after reading this book. But, you'll be much better prepared and you should find many of the patterns here very helpful.

Effective, practical ways to successfully effect change...
By Thomas Duff
Have you ever wondered how to effectively introduce new ideas in your organization and get them to fly? Wonder why some people effortlessly get buy-in on their ideas while you struggle? Mary Lynn Manns, Ph. D. and Linda Rising, Ph. D. reveal some of those secrets in the book Fearless Change - Patterns For Introducing New Ideas (Addison Wesley).

Chapter list:

Part 1 - Overview: Organizations and Change; Strategies or Patterns; Where Do I Start?; What Do I Do Next?; Meetings and More; Take Action!; It's All About People; A New Role: Now You're Dedicated!; Convince The Masses; More Influence Strategies; Keep It Going; Dealing with Resistance

Part 2 - Experiences: Multiple Sclerosis Society Experience Report; UNCA Experience Report; Sun Core J2EE Patterns Experience Report; Customer Training Experience Report

Part 3 - The Patterns

Appendix; References; Index

I'd have typed in each of the patterns, but that would have put me over Amazon's word limit on reviews! :-)

The concept of "patterns" involve finding a practice, or a method of doing something that is successful and can be applied to multiple situations. This is similar to the use of patterns in programming, where you use a particular type of program structure to solve a problem, knowing that the architecture and process has been proven to work in multiple settings. Manns and Rising use this pattern concept to show how you can successfully push new ideas through in an organization without making mistakes that will derail you before you even get started.

For instance, "Location, Location, Location" talks about how moving to a off-site area (or a very nice area) can limit distractions and also show the group how important the idea is. "Guru On Your Side" helps you understand how cultivating a guru who likes your idea can help smooth the path as others in the organization will be more willing and ready to accept the idea from them. A "Champion Skeptic" pattern is to bring in a person who may be less than thrilled with your idea, but is willing to talk about why and help you make it a better one. There are a total of 49 patterns you can utilize during all phases of an idea or project, but I think you can get the idea where the value in this book lies.

As everyone is involved in selling their ideas at some point, this book will be important to just about everyone across an organization. If you want to be more effective in getting people to follow you when things change (or need to), reading this book will get you there.

Powerful, yet simple, change toolkit
By G
I had found myself moderately successful at introducing new ideas and influencing change in my organizations, but never knew why, or how to improve my ability to influence and sustain the change effort. The lightbulb was illuminated immediately upon getting a few patterns into this book- I had been, in one way or another, using some of these patterns without realizing it. Opportunities I had failed to take advantage of in the past became obvious as well in many patterns that were new to me, and in the past went unrecognized (next time, they will either be easy to spot or part of the plan in the first place!)

Once you are able to recognize techniques as patterns, influence becomes something much more controllable. This is a powerful, easy-to-use (and reuse) toolkit for introducing ideas and influencing change. I believe that those experienced in influencing change will find a well thought out set of techniques and those unsure of even how to start will have a great roadmap and set of practices to start with and to invoke as-needed as their change efforts evolve.

Required Reading for Programmers (and Everyone Else)
By Randall Degges
I have a lot to say about this book, primarily because it is one of the few books I've read that has been amazing in pretty much every way:

* Its purpose is clear and useful: how to manage your time better.
* The writing is thoughtful, pragmatic, and extremely captivating: the author does an excellent job conveying his thoughts to you in the text.
* The flow of the book is simple and straightforward.
* The illustrations in the book are fun, educational, and beautiful.
* The layout of the book is structured in a very intuitive way: each section covers various short topics, each about a page in length. This makes it very easy to flip through for later reference, and find information on specific topics.

If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book: do it now! I promise you will enjoy it, and the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.

Onto the actual book review! :)

SUMMARY
-------

This book teaches you the Pomodoro Technique--a simple time management technique that has been around since the 80s. The main points of the Pomodoro Technique can be summed up as follows:

* The human mind is awful at multitasking.
* When you are intensely focused on a single task, you work more effectively, and feel more productive.
* Procrastination stems from anxiety about the future.
* You are less likely to procrastinate if you know that you only need to do a small thing.
* A single Pomodoro is a 25 minute chunk of working time, followed by a break.
* By working on a single task for a 25 minute chunk of time, you are able to focus intensely on a single task and make a lot of progress.
* After a 25 minute chunk (a Pomodoro), you reward yourself with a short break.
* Before starting a Pomodoro, you analyze your responsibilities, and pick the most urgent thing that needs attention.
* When you work on your Pomodoro, you make a contract with yourself to intently focus on the task at hand, and nothing else.

Essentially: the Pomodoro technique is a simple time management technique that helps you stay productive, and relaxed. It helps combat stress by forcing your attention to a single thing at a time, which subsequently improves mood, productivity, and excitement.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
-----------------

1. One Activity at a Time
2. Context
3. Mechanics
4. Interruptions
5. Estimate
6. Adapt
7. Team

Each section is filled with multiple chapters, explaining various things related to the section topic. The book is extremely easy to read (each chapter is a single page), and written in a way that draws you into the topics discussed. It was hard to put this book down as I was reading it.

ADVICE
------

This is an *awesome* book. It should be required reading for anyone who does any sort of work that requires extensive brainpower. Since reading this book, I've been practicing the Pomodoro technique almost every day, to great results:

- I feel much more relaxed while I'm working.
- I feel a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
- I know that I'm making progress on my projects.
- I'm able to really enjoy what I'm doing at a much higher level than I was before.

To me, the Pomodoro Technique *feels right*. It feels natural. It's not one of those things that you read about, and never implement because it is time consuming, confusing, or difficult: it is easy, and you will *want* to do it!

I highly recommend this book.

NOTE
----

Staffan: if, by chance, you end up reading this review: Thanks for writing this book--it has really changed my life for the better.

I'm a Fan of Pomodoro Technique, But Not of This Book
By T.
I read about the Pomodoro technique online, so I was interested in trying a book on it. I saw this one in my local bookstore and got it, and it was not an enjoyable experience at all.

There is just too much information in the book that is mildly interesting but tangential at best in relation to the Pomodoro Technique. Some of the information seemed marginally relevant, and I kept waiting for the author to tie it into the technique and he didn't. Also, the prose is very painful to get through. It feels like maybe an engineer would get more out of this dry reading experience.

I wanted to rate this higher because I'm a fan of the technique and the author seems like a nice, enthusiastic fellow, but I had to really force myself to finish the book. Later on I realized the actual creator of the Pomodoro Technique has a free downloadable PDF available on his website that explains the technique in a more concise and straightforward method. I downloaded that and read it and it was far more enjoyable and helpful to me.

Interesting Productivity Approach
By David Green
The Pomodoro approach basically is perform tasks within a time-boxes with a timer enforcing the timebox. The basic approach suggests a 25 minute timebox with relaxing and retrospection outside of the time-boxes. It is a well written book that is easy to read with some lots of sketches that were watercolored by the author. There are also mindmaps of each chapter although they were not all that helpful to me. I have been convinced to try to the technique as an execution technique below a GTD task tracking system. There is a free pdf-book by the inventor of the technique which is also worth reading. This book contributes additional useful process to the method. Pragmatic Programmers (the publisher) has mobile versions of the book.
