wonderful insights
By Bjerkana
This book really brings to life the issues we hear all the time on the news but with a warmth and heart which grabs you. The people inhabiting Kim's pages are living and breathing and, despite involvement in domestic violence, petrol sniffing, drinking and other behaviours we like to condemn, it's easy to love and care about his characters. Kim moves easily between the perceptions of the white and aboriginal characters and takes you along with him. I found this book totally absorbing and engaging and can't wait to read more from this author.

compelling but sad
By Jonathan Borwein
This book traces the separation of two peoples within one community. In the end there are some who can understand and really appreciate those two communities. Racism needs to be replaced by an understanding of differences between people. The story underscores how lack of self respect leads to to violence and unproductive lives. The similarly unproductive overview of government bodies past and present resonates in both this volume and Kim Scott's other book Benang.

Beautifully written
By fred smith
This book gives insight into life in a remote Aboriginal community. It is beautifully written, the characters and their lives are described in a lyrical, poetic voice. Though the community is beset by many destructive problems it's not depressing but a great read. A must for new teachers in remote schools
