*Starred Review* One of the longest-running jokes in series fiction has been Horace Rumpole's oft-repeated reference to his triumph in the Penge Bungalow case, which he defended in the Old Bailey "alone and without a leader." Fans long tantalized by references to the great legal case of the postwar years now can have a novel-length bath in it. Rumpole, shocked that the newbies in chambers have never heard of this case (they are even a little vague about the identity of Churchill, he feels), commits it to memoir. Mortimer thus gives us two Rumpoles here: the singularly acerbic old Rumpole, still moving through Chambers and the Old Bailey, but also wryly commenting on young "white wig" Rumpole--acerbic, fond of quoting Romantic poets, yes; but also ambitious ("craven," old Rumpole calls it); and very nervous. A lot of mysteries are cleared up along the way: for example, how the criminal family, the Timsons, first fell into Rumpole's lap; how his wife, Hilda ("She Who Must Be Obeyed"), first darkened his door; and the origin of the term "Chateau Thames Embankment." The Penge Bungalow case itself is a rip-snorter: two RAF fliers living next to each other in bungalows right after World War II are both murdered with a German pistol; the accused is the son of one of the victims. Wonderful Reading

It's nice that Mortimer has, at long last, is filled us in on the case cited by so many earlier Rumpole stories. After such a big buildup, however, it's hard to come up with a story to top "Rumpole and the Golden Thread," "Rumpole and the Genuine Article," etc, and in fact, this story doesn't. That said, Mortimer even at not-quite-best, is still much wittier and sharper than most writers, and it's always a great pleasure to read him.
Here an aging Rumpole tells of how he, a "white wig" in the 1950s, assisted his head of chambers, C. H. Wystan, in defending a young man accused of murdering two war heroes. Wystan clearly didn't believe in the man's innocence, and had prepared a half-hearted defense that outraged Rumpole. We already know from other stories, that Rumpole somehow got control of this case. But how? And how could he possibly win it?
Very enjoyable reading. Follow it up with the even better "Rumpole and the Reign of Terror."

As Sherlock Holmes always alludes to his unwritten stories ("The Giant Rat of Sumatra" etc.) and makes them tantalizing because they, being unwritten, could be more sensational than any ever presented before, Rumpole has always dangled the Penge Bungalow Murders before us. In this novel, Mortimer takes his own bait and attempts to write the story--and it's good! I was disappointed when I first read it some years ago. But rereading it, I've concluded that he (Mortimer/Rumpole) won the prize. And, of course, it is always wonderful to read a book and be in such good company.

And what, you may ask, is the question I'm talking about? Here it can only be to ask author John Mortimer what happened in the Penge Bungalow Murders. At long last, we have his answer.

If you are a fan of the Rumpole of the Bailey mystery series, you have spent years and years wondering about the case Horace Rumpole uses to define the beginning of his career in representing defendants in criminal cases. Throughout the many books we readers have been given hints of what that case involved, glimplses into how it changed Rumpole and his career in chambers at Equity Court. Now, in this volume, Rumpole decides to write his memoirs and we are given the details of the Penge Bungalow Murders where Rumpole appeared alone and without a leader. How this all came about and what the outcome of it all was makes for a very entertaining story.

The story takes place in the early 1950's when the happenings of World War II are still fresh in the memories of those involved in that horrific conflict. A group of men who served together as combat pilots get together for a reunion of sorts. When the next day dawns, two of the men are dead and the son of one of those murdered is accused of the crimes. Rumpole must learn his way around a criminal courtroom very quickly if he is to save Simon Jerold from a guilty verdict and a date with the executioner.

This was a very interesting story for me, not so much because it is a good mystery (it is rather a weak story), but because it put all the characters I have come to associate with Rumpole in their proper places. It filled in the background for Rumpole himself, gave me information about him as a young man and a young lawyer. It detailed how Hilda became not just involved with him, but married to him. I've always known that Rumpole and Hilda were not exactly a match made in heaven, now I understand how their partnership came about. It was also nice to find out that Rumpole had friends, both male and female outside the law profession, before She Who Must Be Obeyed came on the scene. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story to complete my knowledge of a fictional character I've "known" for many years.

Great Primer

I just found this book in the new book shelves at the university library. What a find! This book is a perfect primer for someone wanting to learn about the early Civil Rights Movement in the USA. It is also perfect to use in the classroom. The margins are filled with information about the various key players. The author also included a timeline, important documents, a list of important key figures in the movement, and other useful matter.

This book is useful for teachers who teach: American History, Civil Rights, Social Movements, African American History, and American Politics. The book is written well and is not filled with academese. It's an engaging read about a pivotal point in the history of the US.

Great Book!!!

The book is great for getting a very detailed account of the history of the civil rights movement. The terms and the timeline are also very helpful and things that you won't find so clearly laid out in other books.

There are some verbs and descriptions that the author uses too loosely, as though he were there at the historical events about which he's speaking, but it doesn't really matter because you will most likely be reading the book for the historical facts and terminolgy.

It's an easy read and a book that you should keep so that you can go back to it for research and just in general.

WOW! I'm Blown Away!

When I spotted this book at Barnes & Noble and took a glance through it out of curiosity, I didn't expect THAT to be a life changing moment! But it was. The book looked interesting, and having read the Seth books and the Hicks books as well as the Sanaya Romane books, I decided to order this on Amazon, though I thought it would be more information about the same as the other books (all of which are very good, by the way!).

When I started reading this book, I was struck by the personal way in which it was written. It spoke directly to me, it described stages of my life I had been through and am going through. I almost expected to see my name inserted among the pages, it spoke so directly to me! But as I was reading this book, everything in life began to make sense to me. It was like I was standing above myself and looking down at my life with detachment and objectivity. I could start to see how all of life fits together. It's all energy. Something started to click for me. I had wondered how shamans claim that they go to underworlds and experience levels of reality the rest of us cannot fathom, and yet others are reiki Masters and move energy through them for healing purposes, and yet others still practice wicca and with ritual bring about the changes in their lives that they desire, etc. How could all these people be right about what they do? How could all these things exist at once and each of these methods work to bring about change? Well, it's because it's all movement of energy and desire. With driven intent anything can be brought about into manifestation. Ahhh ha! Now I get it!

If you liked "The Secret", well then this is the next level. It's about more than the Law of Attraction. It's about changing the world by changing the way you think, the way you feel, and the way you react to situations as they pop up in your life.

My highest recommendation to you is to read this book. It speaks with clarity and a deep rooted truth you can feel in your entire being as you read the words written. "Oneness" is truly a gift to savor ... for a lifetime.

"Oneness" is one of the most astounding books we've ever read. It presents a rich and multi-dimensional perspective of our journey through this world that encourages us to live life fully and embrace our lessons. This book pulls no punches regarding the adventures that one encounters on this journey from the prison house of reactive ignorance to the palace of eternal light. "Oneness" also reveals the nature and impact of the accelerating energetic environment on our physical, emotional and subtle bodies. It provides the insight necessary to traverse these times when many of our habits and cultural structures tend to keep us in patterns that are unfavorable to the ascension process.

"Oneness" is full of third eye-openers that encourage us to observe Life from many different perspectives. A few of our favorite tasty morsels that exemplify themes many of us have struggled with are as follows:

* The role of adversarial relationships in our journey.

* How our reactions to expectations (theirs and ours), impact us.

* The underlying causes of our circumstances, including health issues from an energetic perspective.

* Why it is increasingly difficult to remain in relationships where harmony seems to be on permanent vacation.

My partner, George and I have been integrating and applying insights from "Oneness" for over two years. The application brings greater understanding and joy every day, not to mention less melodrama. I've never experienced a book that feels "new" every time you re-visit a chapter until I read "Oneness".

Overcoming my Grief

Oneness speaks in a voice that reaches out to the heart of each of us. The words are personal - and the experience of embracing the understandings they hold is transformational. We come away from the simple act of reading feeling like we've been touched by something indescribable - and holy.

I am a little over halfway in my reading of "Oneness". I am so overwhelmed by what it is teaching me, that I can scarcely put it into words. In reading through some of the comments on your website, I can see that other readers also feel as if the book was directly written for and speaking to them on a personal, individual basis. This is how I feel.

Immediately upon beginning the book, I knew I had found something very meaningful. I am blown away, and will never be the same person I was prior to reading. My story began 3 years ago on January 25, 2008 when my Beloved husband suddenly died of a heart attack. I felt so wounded in my Soul and Spirit that I just didn't see how I could possibly go on. It could have gone either way, but for me - I began searching for answers, and a path to God that I KNEW had to exist although I had never found it - being neither a religious nor spiritual person. I was like a crazy woman going here, going there, searching, reading hundreds of books. That's really all I did is read, attend workshops, attend anything that spoke about the hereafter, etc. But I did find what I was looking for in terms of my spiritual path. I know without a doubt because it resonates truth to me.

At any rate, even though I was now on the right path, my heart was still hurting beyond any hope I could see for healing. I cried less, but still whenever I would think about my husband being gone, and me alone for who knows how many more years. I felt desolated and deserted and hopeless and more... I say all that to get to my point. Today is Sunday. Last Tuesday night I was reading "Oneness" in bed. Suddenly, every sentence, every paragraph I read, felt like the Holy Spirit was sitting by my side providing the answers that I had searched for for the past 3 years! I cried and couldn't stop crying with happiness. I know in my heart that I was led to this book to help me get to the other side of my grief. I felt a tremendous Grace fall over me and I just kept saying, Thank you, Thank you.

The part that struck home to me the most was when I read that I need to honor his passing through death's portal because I must understand it is not the end, it truly is a portal into another existence; that he and I had an old agreement that we would be a part of this life together for our soul's growth. I then realized that I was so grateful that he had been such a wonderful part of my life, and I could do no less
than honor his choice to go through the portal when he did. It's amazing what a difference this realization made to me. I am at peace.

I understand, support, and honor his choice now. I do not feel deserted, and without hope. I feel that I can move forwards rather than being stuck in 2008. I want to say that this book has been a life saver for me and I am filled with gratitude and love that it was available.

EDITED POORLY; do not buy

This short book sounds like the author went to an article on the Internet and copied and pasted. No insightful info; all basic with no strategies or plans to impart on the reader. In addition, could he have at least edited it for grammar errors? It read like a uneducated illiterate drop out. Very insulting.

The Neverending Story

A history of almost 200 years of political, economic, and military maneuvering between Russia and England over Central Asia, which reads a bit like, as another reviewer has said, today's headlines. It is arranged chronologically and clearly written, although a bit dull; none of the characters, Russian, English, or native rulers, many of whom were rather colorful, come to life. The maps, though small, help make sense of the geography, some of which is still being fought over today. The sad thing is that "spheres of influence" is still a rationale for countries, as Russia takes back the Crimea, which belonged to the Ottoman Empire, and then Russia, and then was fought over between England and Russia, and then became part of the Ukraine, etc. My primary issue with the book is the jingoistic Anglocentric point of view. Granted the book was written by a Brit, but he goes out of his way to paint natives and their rulers as brutal and treacherous, and the Russians as sly, devious, and aggressive. He displays an undeveloped sense of irony because the actions of the English he describes are exactly the same as those of the Russians and, in many cases, the native rulers. Instead of owning people, the empires of those days owned countries.

Lessons for Today

Anyone who thinks we can deal with Afghan warlords might want to read this book. It's a great cautionary tale about the British experience in that country during the 19th century. Part spy story and part history, the book is interesting and it's kind of an eye-opener about how little the culture there has changed.
