Brilliant, if rather dated

Mircea Eliade's contribution to the study of religion cannot be overestimated; his works quite simply revolutionized the discipline. Unfortunately, he had a tendency, especially in later life, to crank out volumes on every conceivable theme and concept, and many of these later works simply do not work. But he wrote a small number of great books, works without which you simply cannot claim to have read the "classics." Patterns is one of these great books.
The translation is dubious, to the say the least, but even so Eliade comes through. He always does. In Patterns, he walks through a kaleidoscope of images and concepts, demonstrating at once his brilliance and his disturbingly broad reading. He never uses one example where ten will serve, and this becomes part of the whole argumentative structure of the book.
The point, you see, is that these "patterns" he pulls out-out of history, out of context, whatever-appear again and again. The opening chapter, on "Sky Gods," for example, is a little manifesto, a demonstration of everything Eliade is all about. If you really master this chapter, come to understand every bit of how it works, you will truly understand Eliade.
For those who have been introduced to Eliade through The Sacred and the Profane, for example, and are looking for an accessible book, Patterns does have the difficulty of moving rather rapidly through its arguments. Some discussions simply move too fast for the general reader; Eliade is trying to talk primarily to scholars, and as such he assumes that his readers have some familiarity with his examples. But unless you plan to challenge his thought deeply, you simply do not need to read all of the background material.
One failing of Patterns is simply its publication date: this book is from the fifties. And a lot has changed since then, particularly our knowledge of lots of other religions. So sometimes his examples seem simplistic, or downright dubious-and they are! But you just can't begin to make sense of Eliade without Patterns.
If you liked Joseph Campbell, it's time to step up to the plate. Read Patterns, maybe reading Cosmos and History and The Sacred and the Profane first, and you'll see the real thing at work. It's true, he doesn't really address his audience magnetically as Campbell sometimes does, but then his project is primarily to suggest to that reading and studying other people's religions is the only way for moderns. You see, desacralization has made modern humanity incapable of seeing the truly powerful worldview of homo religiosus (religious humanity). But unlike Campbell, Eliade doesn't think that we can solve this by getting in touch with our bliss and our myths; he thinks that only reading books can approximate this world.
Admittedly, from a scholarly perspective Eliade is a crypto-theologian with a huge axe to grind. Sure, some of his examples are extremely problematic-a point that Jonathan Z. Smith has made on more than one occasion. But like Smith, I'd argue that we need to go through, not around: without Eliade, we can never really make sense of how we look at religion now, how everyone looks at it.
The point about Patterns is that it's really a great book. It's wrong-about just about everything, when you get down to it!-but it's one that needs to be read. These days, lots of folks in and out of the Ivory Tower seem to want to get in touch with spirituality. But Eliade was talking about this fifty years ago, and his points still have considerable weight. Why reinvent the wheel? Go to the source, read Eliade at his best, and feel a revolution overtaking you.

this is a must-have book for everyone interested in mythology and religion. this book defines what religion was to ancient people, and what was considered sacred to them. it covers the structure of the sacred, the sky and sky gods, the sun and sun-worship, the moon, water and water symbolism, sacred stones(why they were considered sacred), the earth/woman/fertility connection, vegetation/regeneration, the axis mundi, agriculture and fertility cults, sacred places, sacred time, the function of myths, and the structure of symbols. in this book you will find what all religions and mythologies, from all over the world, have in common. you will find the roots of all religious beliefs in this book. it is definitely worth your time to read, again and again.

Wolfed it down in one gulp

Kelley Armstrong has a reputation for doing the unexpected, but in all of my years of following the OTHERWORLD STORIES I never would have guessed that Malcolm Danvers would be re-inducted into the American Pack. I genuinely thought that the probability of pigs flying was higher! DRIVEN begins with him meeting Elena in Bulgaria to discuss terms, ends with the unveiling of his true reason for rejoining, and there’s a kickass mutt hunt in-between.

This short takes place a couple of months after FORSAKEN, so because the two are closely intertwined it’s recommended that you read both. And, although the novella stands well enough on its own, newcomers will definitely miss out on the long running character histories. Malcolm didn’t become the nightmare of the werewolf world overnight, and in order to truly appreciate his level of depravity it’s important to start from ground zero.

Michaels is my favourite OTHERWORLD narrator, and I loved that she was this title’s lead. She’s getting more adept in her role as Alpha, and I really enjoyed how she handled Danvers senior. Wolves have a long life span, and the way the Pack is run has drastically changed since Malcolm was an enforcer, so it was fun watching him date himself, and I took real pleasure in the fact that his infamy was lost on the younger generation.

The Cain family needs no introduction because quite frankly they wrote the book on mutt bad behaviour. The plot surrounding the skinned weres was quite good, and I liked that Armstrong incorporated a few little bonuses that her rabid fans are sure to appreciate. Namely, the twins had a pretty awesome scene with Danvers, and Nick and Vanessa got a slice of a HEA which was nice. Davis also had one chapter from his POV—future Pack member?

I wolfed down DRIVEN in one gulp!

I highly recommend it for fans of the Women of the Otherworld series.

I'm a fan of the Women of Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong and I love the world where story takes place, which is in today's world but combined with the supernatural elements such as werewolves, vampires, witches, sorcerers, necromancers, half-demons, demons, etc. I am also a fan of her Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising trilogies, those too take place in the same world, but is aimed at a young audience, while the Otherworld series is for adults.

The last book in the series Thirteen was published in 2012 and I was sad to say goodbye to this series, but thanks to Kelley Armstrong and her short stories and novellas (here you can see a list of them) ... I'm still visiting the characters that I loved so much and Driven is an urban fantasy novella of 232 pages about Elena Michaels's pack, she's my favorite heroine of the series ..... this novella ties up loose ends related to the pack but also we get so see more of the life of the members of her pack (Clayton, Kate, Logan, Jeremy, Nick, Vanessa, Reese, Maddie, Noah, Karl, Hope and Antonio). In addition to finally know what will happen with Malcolm Danvers, Jeremy's father, a lunatic murderer that is sore spot for Elena's pack and she must decide what to do with him once and for all.

And other part of the plot is that Elena must discover what that is hunting and killing the Cains, a family of werewolves that hates the pack and have always caused them problems, but Davis Cain, a young werewolf seeks help from the pack and she decides to help him despite how much enmity had existed between them.

One thing that I liked very much is the mention Derek Souza (briefly), which is a character of the Darkest Powers trilogy and my favorite character of that trilogy.

Driven is a novella that I enjoyed very much, just for the nostalgia of visiting once more that world, its characters and have a glimpse in their lives. As always these stories have action, mystery and funny parts.

The Pack Changes it Up

I have followed Clay and Elena from the beginning and loved seeing them in this next stage in their story. It was an action packed, edge of your seat, mystery, romance, with many humorous moments. I love with this pack, they are united and strong even when.... I am really looking forward to see where these characters go, especially the twins. Special, it too tame of a word for these two.
Time has marched on and Elena and Clay's twins are now 9 years old. The pack dynamic has changed. Elena is now Alpha, and Clay her Beta, and the kids are more than average werewolf children. An old nasty wolf with a repulsive history wants to rejoin the pack. Somebody is killing wolves in a revolting way and his power is needed. A certain amount of trust most be given to save the wolves. It could turn out to be their biggest mistake. The mystery is in the why and the who is killing these wolves with such emotion. It is a twisted road with many obstacles and a new direction for the pack.
Changes in a long running series are Important to keep a fresh feeling. Ms. Armstrong has written it and done it well.

A playful book for the younger set but also factual for more inquisitive kids. The illustrations perfectly pair with each chosen animal to complete the short lesson on animal sleep habits. A very unique format that will help get your kids to calm down and dream away about their favorite animals.

I was privileged to hear Thomas do a public reading of this book to a group of kids. It is beautifully illustrated and includes a variety of animals that the kids found very interesting. He is also a comfortable communicator. We picked this up for our family and look forward to many bedtime readings as we ease our own little ones off to a great nights' sleep!

Excellent information

This book has for anyone that questions why they can't remember something. That is probably most of the adult population.

I found the “Four Keys to Growth” very interesting and helpful. Actually I found the entire book helpful and will be re-reading it. Will read several times because of course I have already forgotten quite a bit that I read the first time.

After reading this I may need to back off on the caffeine and get more sleep.

This is a well written book with a lot to take in and benefit from.

I did not order nor did I download or receive this book. I think it is shameful that a company as large as Amazon does not have procedures online that customers can use to remedy situations like this. I have been a loyal and long time customer, but now I am considering doing all my online shopping elsewhere.

Although I was skeptical about self-help books in general, yet I decided to go with this one and its pretty great. I keep going back to the chapter about gambling and magicians because there is so much amazing stuff in there. This is soo good.
