It's true that some people spend years studying German before they finally get around to speaking the language. But here's a better idea. Skip the years of study and jump right to the speaking part. Sound crazy? No, it's language hacking.
Unlike most traditional language courses that try to teach you the rules of German, #LanguageHacking shows you how to learn and speak German through proven memory techniques, unconventional shortcuts and conversation strategies perfected by one of the world's greatest language learners, Benny Lewis, aka the Irish Polyglot.
Using the language hacks -shortcuts that make learning simple - that Benny mastered while learning his 11 languages and his 'speak from the start' method, you will crack the language code and exponentially increase your language abilities so that you can get fluent faster.
It's not magic. It's not a language gene. It's not something only "other people" can do. It's about being smart with how you learn, learning what's indispensable, skipping what's not, and using what you've learned to have real conversations in German from day one.
The Method
#LanguageHacking takes a modern approach to language learning, blending the power of online social collaboration with traditional methods. It focuses on the conversations that learners need to master right away, rather than presenting language in order of difficulty like most courses. This means that you can have conversations immediately, not after years of study.
Each of the 10 units culminates with a speaking 'mission' that prepares you to use the language you've learned to talk about yourself. Through the language hacker online learner community, you can share your personalized speaking 'missions' with other learners - getting and giving feedback and extending your learning beyond the pages of the book . You don't need to go abroad to learn a language any more.

About the Author
Irish native Benny Lewis speaks over ten languages - all self-taught. In 2003, he spoke only one language: English. After university, he moved to Spain and was soon frustrated that he could not speak Spanish after six months of studying. So he decided to abandon traditional learning approaches and just start speaking - and everything changed. Today Benny is known as The Irish Polyglot and speaks Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Hungarian. He is the author of the bestselling book on language learning, Fluent in 3 months. He also runs the largest language learning blog in the world, www.fluentin3months.com, where he breaks down the language learning process for busy people. Lewis is a full-time 'language hacker,' and devotes his time to finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to learn languages. For the first time, he has applied his methods to helping people learn specific languages in his new Language Hacking series.

Blown Away: Better than I Could Have Imagined
By Natasha Smith
I love Benny, but initially I was only going to purchase this one book from his new series, since I already have some experience with French, Italian, and Spanish. Now that it's in my hands, I'm so glad that I ordered all four!
I've had textbooks. I've used workbooks. There are apps, podcasts, and many other ways to learn languages. But Benny takes you through all of the initial steps with ease in a way that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, which is why he put these books together - he's familiar with the existing resources, and this is something NEW. Benny focuses on shortcuts that he calls "hacks" to aid in understanding grammar and memorizing words. It's built around conversations, but not in the hokey tourist-focused way most schoolroom courses plod through dialogues. You engage with the conversations much more dynamically, figuring out how to communicate things about yourself and specifics to listen for. Benny also assembles "conversational connectors" so that you can start to sound more natural in your speech. There is online audio to augment the book as well.
While the course is built around working up to your first conversation, this book isn't strictly limited to beginners. It's quite helpful for review or filling in gaps in your knowledge. The layout is appealing and the book is thick, which makes it well-balanced: this is a course you'll want to stick with, because it's encouraging, meaty, and totally doable. The exercises are far more engaging than what I've seen in most workbooks; they help you focus your attention and get the most that you can out of each lesson. Above all, this book feels personal. It's a companion on your journey, a kickstart, a reference book and motivational sidekick all rolled into one. You'll be writing all over it, of course, so if you're learning in tandem you should each have your own copy. But that's what's brilliant about this: it's more durable and meaningful than the average workbook that you wouldn't really need after you've finished it, and it will be invaluable throughout your learning process. I haven't started learning German yet, but this is all I'll need for the first few weeks when I start. And from there, I'll be conversant and comfortable with forging ahead on my own.

Language-learning gold mine!
By Sarah E Streit
Benny Lewis has done what the masses have been screaming at language-learning book publishers to do for ages, which is to construct a language-learning book that is fun, practical, and teaches you how to learn a language the way you learned your first language. Every language course I've ever taken before reading this book starts you off with learning simple phrases that are useful to know (the "Hi, how are you?" type phrases) and spark your interest in the language (you feel "pumped up", like you've already made some progress in your target language), but then the book goes off the deep end and immerses you into the complex world of grammar, verb conjugation, and a bunch of vocabulary words that you don't care about (just yet); vocabulary words are grouped into subjects, not by usefulness in everyday life, so by the end of the chapter you theoretically know how to say every kind of fruit or furniture, but can't construct a (useful) sentence using those new vocabulary words. With this kind of style of language learning, a hopeful student is quick to become exasperated, like they "just can't learn a new language", as the whole point of learning a language (for most people, I presume) is to be able to communicate with an increased number of people, not to know all the words. Furthermore, we see the spelling of words as we learn them, and maybe there are some pronunciation "guidelines", but these guidelines are no substitute for hearing the words spoken by a native speaker. This method of language learning is not how we learn our mother tongue - we don't learn it through conjugation charts and vocabulary lists, but by listening to how our parents (native speakers) speak and by testing the waters for ourselves. We pick up essential phrases, vocabulary when we need it, and learn through trial and error. This is the idea behind Benny Lewis's language-learning gold mine of a series - to teach us how to learn a language in a way that is fun and in the way we were meant to learn languages. And because most of us are unable to uproot and move to a new country for the sole purpose of learning a new language, this book contains links for audio tracks so you can start to fine-tune your ears to the sounds of your new language - and can start experimenting yourself! In summary, if you're serious about learning a new language, this is the way to go! Happy language-learning!

FINALLY I SPEAK!
By M. J. Rodney
First full disclosure -- I participated in a pre-pub group of put-it-through-its-paces readers, and I am so glad I did. I'll give you the cons, the pros, the think-about-its, but for my money and learning style, this book is worth it.
I heard about Benny through a Tim Ferris interview and started checking out interviews, podcasts, his blog, etc. The approach intrigued me -- it seemed so liberating! Yet in the past, with Rosetta Stone, or Living Language, or whatever audio programs I checked out of the library, I drilled and drilled til I was bored stiff, never approaching either the perfection I required or the confidence for a simple conversation. And that's what Benny's Language Hacking approach gives me -- freedom from my overly analytical drive for perfection, freedom from mindnumbing drills. Oh the drills, the memorization, they're still there, they have to be. But right from the start I'M SPEAKING!!! And that is my goal after all. His "Missions" are concepts, motivating the student to figure out how to talk about what matters to them (bike travel? ecotourism? Feminism in India?) by employing some simple workaround methods that will allow me the beginner to say what I want to say. The best part? Participating in the Language Hacking community on a regular, almost daily basis, posting my practice videos, getting feedback and encouragement.
Cons: I had access to a pre-pub version, and there were some errors re the answer sheets, that I hope have since been caught in the editing. Also the audio version has had some glitches, but Ive gotten very positive response to any feedback I've provided, so I'd encourage new readers to do that as well. I don't think the answer key is laid out well, but it would undoubtedly add many more pages and additional cost to the book to improve on it.
Style - this worked for me, it's for a beginner, I had absolutely no background in German. But I will apply the same techniques to my French and Spanish, which need refreshing, so I've ordered those books as well. I also needed to escape the Drive for Perfection, which would free me up to SPEAK!! I'd say Benny's approach is ideal for this. If your goal is to be able to read or write in an academic context, then this may not be the best source for you. But speaking? Go for it.
